I use the notes for some payments.

I have a 2 week event wher people pay by the day.

I created a code ENS (entered not sailed) with the same points as DNC.

I put this over days where payments were made.

When I entered the results I knew therefore if the competitor had paid.

I could print the results for the individual day in Publish so the other
codes were hidden.

Have we lost the ability to provint individual fleets (starts) in the new
system?

Just a thought

Would it be possible to set up a Networked version of Sailwave.

i.e.

Say 4 PC's up in the control tower for entry of Start/Finish Times

Another 4 PC's downstairs in the Enrolment office where People enter
the race and their details

Another 2 PC's just for the display of results to competitors.

and perhaps later to allow data input via Wi-Fi from the
Committee-Boat(s) via PDA (also perhaps to include things such as
penalties and exoneration's and/or each lap time.

Regards
Terry

up to my knowledge, there is no prog for us that can do that yet; would be the first one!

agree to terry, would be a beautifull feature!

Terry,

It depends what you mean, but I could do this (see below) fairly easily:-

Whenever something is changed, write the changes back to the series file.
The write back would wait for the file if another computer was using it.

In that way N computers could be safely working on the same file - there
would be no noticeable changes to the user, you just open a file and use it,
but perhaps I'd add a share menu rather than use open. "Safely" in this
context means that it all hangs together from a computing POV, it does not
stop N computers/users contradicting themselves; that would be for your
operational procedures to sort out.

Would that be useful?

If it is, I'll include it in the next 1.58 beta.

It would also probably be a good idea to have a list of users currently
sharing the file and have a message ability between them etc etc.

Regards,
Colin

Mike,

Have we lost the ability to provint individual fleets (starts) in the new
system?

Nothing has been removed in the new system; it much more flexible. Please
see the ptrevious message about starts and scoring ny any field. Reproduced
below. Please get back to me if you have any queries.

********copy

** ANYBODY USING THE SAIL NUMBER WIZARD,
** PLEASE READ THIS AND RESPOND IF YOU
** ARE UNCLEAR ABOUT ANYTHING.

When entering results, it keeps reverting to 'Place or retirement
code', even when 'Elapsed time or retirement code' has previously
been selected in that wizard session.

It's not a bug (but see my PS below), it's new behaviour...

Prior to 1.57, if you wanted to use the sailno wizard to enter results
across 3 (say) starts, each recorded in a different way, say elapsed time,
place and start/finish time, you had to create 3 fleets and remember to
enter at least one result in every race per fleet before using the wizard so
it would catch on.

You don't have to do that now. You create start records for each race
(EDit+Race) specifying how your results are going to be recorded. In the
above example you would create 3 start records.

Then when you run the sailno wizard you can enter sailnos for any of the
starts in any order and sailwave will track whats' happening and be able to
prompt you with the result type expected as per the start specification.

You don't have to define fleets anymore, just start records.

Other added benefits are that things like wind direction, course, race
length, wind strength etc are all recorded in start records now, allowing
much more flexibility (but only in the latest 1.58 beta linked to in a
previous post - which is much better WRT starts).

With the addition of score by any field, not just fleet, (also in the latest
1.58 beta), sailwave now has the overall' spahe' that I have always
intended. That is separating how the boats sailed, from how to score the
boats, because users want to score in lots of weird and wonderful ways, but
the boats only sail in one way.

Scoring rules have replaced fleets, in that you can now create scoring rules
to say things like "when scoring by club and the club=X, use this discard
system and this rating system".

By 'start' I do not mecessarilt mean a separate 'physical' start on the
water, all 3 groups of boats in the above example may have started together,
but there are 3 'logical'/'conceptual' starts because you are recording
places for one group, elapsed times for another and start/finish times for
the third.

I know it's a big change but it really is much better/consistent/flexible
now. It also means I can start to document it for real because the 'shape'
is there.

Please note that if out 3 groups of boats were all to be recorded as
start/finish times or elapsed times, you could ignore creatingh starts and
just set the fall-back finish type in Edit+ScoringSystem.

The starts exists soley to:-
drive the sailno wizard and edit+result
provide wind indexes and race distances when scoring.

That's it; as a side-effect they accurately document how the boats sailed.

I'll be extending publishing to include starts.

Colin J

The only problem I could see is if two people were updating the same field and one changes it to one
value and another person (after the lock has unlocked on the file) changes it again.

Many years ago, when I was a BBS operator for a computer user group, we were using a piece of
software called TBBS. They made a database piece called TDBS which implemented live field locking
which would lock the field live on machines that were looking at a particular record and update the
value live when the value was entered. So when a change was made, everyone looking at that record
would see the record change but could not actually access the field while the field was being
edited.

I doubt that would work in real world without having a lot of traffic going back and forth, but
maybe have a field modified date and if the field were modified within an hour of the same field
being changed, then it would present the user of the latest change a dialog box stating that the
field had been changed by xyz on mm/dd/yyyy hh:mm:ss, are you sure you want to change this field.
This could also lead into some sort of logging security if something was changed for reasons
unknown, you could track the person who made the change.

Colin, I would like to use sailwave to score a large regatta (500 entries)
that includes a cruising fleet. The cruising classes has an adjustment equal
to "IN-GEAR-TIME * 0.4 * SQRT(LWL)" added to there corrected time to
produce a final corrected time.

Would it be possible to add fields that could be used in the scoring formula

- IN-GEAR-TIME - potentially just add a second time field that could be
referenced in a scoring formula.
- LWL - add information about the boat which could be referenced in a
scoring formula, e.g. LOA, Draft, Beam, LWL, etc.

Thanks
