Error calculating using elapsed times only in PHRFTOT

In a recent race, the results were provided to me in elapsed time only.
Since we use PHRFTOT, this was not a problem. However, when the
calculations were made, approximately 10 hours were added to the
corrected times.
I eventually got correct results by running the results with a dummy
start time and using the elapsed times as to create a finish time.
Needless to say, I took a lot of flak for this.

Is this a known problem? If not, how do I submit a copy of the race
reports for analysis to see what I did? I am using 195 build 8.

Thanks, Bill Visser. Collins Bay Yacht Club, Kingston, ON.

Bill,

For this one, the file is also welcome.

Can you please let me know exactly which race in which file (summer or Spring) you are referring to? It will help me to focus in on the problem

I have noticed in the Spring file that some races have start times when they are labelled as Elapsed Times. Haven’t looked at the Summer file yet.

Bill,

I can confirm that there is a problem with the calculation of corrected times when using elapsed times in the PHRFTOT handicap method.

However, the work around is to enter as a start and finish time. I entered a start time of 000000 and then entered the elapsed time as the finish time and get what I believe is a correct set of results.

I will raise the issue with Colin the Sailwave author.

Kind regards,

Did
you maybe use a start time like 11:30:00 and a finish time like 1:30:00.
I’ve had a similar problem. In this case Sailwave thinks the race
was 14 hours long instead of 2. The fix is when we have a race that
starts before noon, we enter the finish times in 24 time like 13:30:00 instead
of 1:30:00. Then it works fine.

Will - yeah, thanks. I did do the work in 24 hour clock. I learned a
long time ago with Sailwave (and pretty much any results program) it
is best to work in a 24 hour clock to avoid the exact situation you
describe.

Huw. Thanks for looking at it. My work around was to enter a start
time of 100000 (10 AM) and then adding a '1' in front of everyones
elapsed time - which in the end produced the same result. By showing
a race start at 10 AM instead of midnight (or 000000) I managed to
avoid a whack of emails from club members who would have raised the
issue of an incorrect starting time. After I published the results, I
realised that all I needed to do was to not print the start and
finish time columns in the results, and just print elapsed time -
which they supplied - and no-one would have been any the wiser.

Thanks for validating my concern and taking it forward.

Bill.

Doing some more messing about, I stumbled on an interesting action.
When I put the scores in as a straight string (ie 030010 representing
3 hours, zero minutes, 10 seconds) the error pops up. But when I
enter the string as 3.00.10 the calculations work correctly. I used
to be able to just put the string in without separating the hms.

Elapsed times are correct. The finish time should be empty, since

the

problem originally occurred when I entered elapsed times only.

Thanks.
