Finally trying NHC for upcoming series

We have a series of races run typically on first Sunday of the month, averaging 2-4 races per day.

I am finally trying to use NHC (in parallel with existing phrf series). I used data from a 2 race day, and added a 3rd race with DNF’s to meet minimum 3 needed). Attached is the file for this attempt.

I assume that I will use the race ratings in ‘race4’ as the starting point in the next race e.g., 180, 181.865, 154.137, 173.998

Do I have this correct?

Thank you

Michael

Hi Michael,

Sorry for the delay - I’m away scoring an event at a present.

First I notice you are using an old version of Sailwave and not using TCF non TCF ratings were not supported by the older version so you need to update to the current version.

I don’t understand what you were trying to do with Race 3 there is no minimum number of races. You need to have 3 boats finishing before NHC will adjust ratings

You must use the Fleet column for scoring with NHC although you can change the name to anything you like such as Division or Class

I’ve attached a modified rescored file for you

Let me know if I help more

Hi Jon,

Thank you for getting back.

I have updated Sailwave to latest version, and cleared the fleet column. But how do you use the fleet column for scoring?

As for TCF ratings, I assume this is related to base ratings? I attempted to use the ‘base ratings’ but couldn’t find the values for numerous boats (Pearson 30, Catalina Capri 22, Harbor 20, Westsail 32) - so, I stayed with PHRF. Will this work with the newer version of Sailwave?

Best regards,

Michael

Hi The file I sent you back already had the settings for the Fleet corrected.

NHC specification is written around TCF. However the recent versions of Sailwave allow you use other rating systems by automatically converting the rating to TCF and then converting back after the calculations have been made. It is design to work with TCF, PY and VYC.

If you press F6 then R the display will show you the ratings calculated so you can check things are going as expected.

Have a play with the Example included with Sailwave and let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Jon - thank you again for your help. Two more questions:

  1. What did you change in order to ‘correct’ the settings for Fleet?

  2. I have attached results from our races on Sunday 5-5. It looks like it worked ok - just want to make sure I have it correct.
    Thank you - Michael

Hi - I’m still away scoring at present
I just copied the class to the fleet column ( Using Menu - Tools - set competitor field )

And set the scoring to score by fleet.

I’ll have a look at your file when I’m home.

Please remind me if I forget.

Hi Jon,

Based on your input on how you changed the fleet column, I did as you said and have attached the modified version, fyi. Looks like the results are the same- but now correctly formatted, I think.

Enjoy your day scoring…

Michael

Hi Michael,

I’ve attached a modified version for you with the fleet set correctly

Have a play with the examples supplied with Sailwave

Hi Jon,

Again, thanks for your
help, and the modified 5-5-2019 blw file.
Since then I took my existing 5-5-2019 phrf file, changed scoring to
fleet, and ‘save as’ a new name and then changed the scoring to nhc, added a blank race at end, and did a
rescore. It is attached (

Avila_MayPHRF_NHC.blw). Hopefully I have this correct.

Now, I am tackling using it to
setup the June Races. I deleted all
races except for last column and saved as (Avila_JunPHRF_NHC.blw).

However, I couldn’t understand how
to follow what you said to ‘John’ “Because you already have results in
your new file you will need to enter them into the Race 1 manually this is not
as big a job as it sounds if you sort them in a known order and then press F6 r
and edit the top one and then you can just go down arrow enter to edit the
next one.”

I could see the nhc values that were
carried forward from the May file, but wasn’t sure how to ‘copy’ these values
into race 1

I hope this isn’t too convoluted…

Michael

Hi Michael,

That all looks sensible to me.

The June file already has the new ratings in it

You just need at add another race then you can enter the results into race 1.

You may need to rename the R1 unless you want to call it R4
