Fleet Scoring for PHRF

I have recently upgraded to the current version (from 1.52?)and have
not been able to figure out the process to score by fleet. I like some
the new features but this and the course distance for each fleet. Is
there some documenation that I can reference?

Err, make sure that every entry is in a Fleet, the press 'Score series' and select 'Score groups of competitors separately.....' or have I missed something?

Hi Randy,

Have a look at the section in the help file about changes from old versions.

Essentially "score by fleet" has been replaced with "score by any field",
and the other changes are a necessary consequence of that. For example
"Fleet records" with scoring system changes for Fleet X have now had to
become the same for when scoring by field F and the value is Y - in this
case field=Fleet and value=X - and the name for these new record is Scoring
Rules. That's it really. It can be useful to get alternative sets of
results out when many fleets have in fact sailed the same course, even if
they are in different starts, because you can score everybudy by club, and
agegroup etc etc which is fun for the competitors. A recent nice example I
saw was an event which split the competitors into 3 distinct divisions,
whentin each division were (one-design) fleets, they scored by fleet and by
division; nice touch. I think it was Mark S.

Colin

1. Since fleets are not now a built-in concept, you just have to enter manually any values you want in the Fleet column, instead of creating fleets through dialogs.

2. Edit race... menu, Create Starts. Each start can have different start time and distance.

3. In the Start Dialog: Select competitors.

4. In the Select competitors add condition Fleet='something' for each start.

5. Click Test to make sure that your version doesn't have a logical bug and selects the correct fleet members.

6. Scoring System toolbar button. Create new system override for each fleet. Those overrides do nothing but allow you to score by fleets. Disregard a message that says that you can remove overrides that do nothing (or maybe it's in the help file).

I am new to Sailwave and I spend an afternoon looking at the software
(version 1.93, build 3) and this user group to see if it fits my
needs. It is a good software and looks promissing but I am not sure it
will do want I want.

We are running an inter club (2 clubs) championship that will run the
whole summer and will be divided in series. We need to create various
scorings; the list is:

- one scoring per fleet per club per serie
- one scoring per fleet per serie for the combined 2 clubs
- one scoring per fleet per club for the season
- one scoring per fleet for the season

this means that I need to be able to select boats based on 2 fields,
which appears not to be possible, unless I am wrong. This is for the
club/inter club issue. On the serie vs season issue; I have no idea
how to do this.

On another aspect; I need to be able to export to Excel. Is there a
way to get elapsed time, corrected time and position into the exported
to clipboard data?

Finally, something thay I know how to fix but our handicaper is
telling me that the PHRF formula is c = e * r (faster boats have a
higher r). The numbers he gives me corespond to that formula. Is it an
usual formula?

Thanks

I am not sure this does what I need. I think my needs were not
properly described. We have boats that belong to different fleets
(PHRF1, 2 and 3) and to different clubs. They all race together but we
want different standings, i.e we want to publish results per club and
per fleet but also an overall standing (the 2 clubs together).

As I understand the scoring rules section, this is used to select the
scoring system or to modify an existing scoring system (for example
different handicap system) for group of boats. It does not appear to
be usable to create different groups within the standings. Anyway,
when rescoring or scoring a serie, there is nothing to select the
scoring rule(s) to use.

The race starts seems to be used to select boats that actually are
supposed to start a race. In my case, all boats do start the race.
With an existing start, I tried to select boats from one club but all
that did was that when I rescore the serie, a red warning came up with
a boat name saying that it did not match the criteria for a race start
(since it is a member of the other club) but that boat was still part
of the standing.

On the export to Excel issue, the problem is that I want to export all
the race data, i.e. elapsed times, corrected times and score points to
a single Excel sheet. Other than repeating the process 3 times and
somehow manually combining the data (with all the possibilities of
making an error in the process) I do nto how this can be done.

Thanks

Claude

The problem is that I need to score by fleet and byb club at the same
time, i.e. get a per club and per fleet scoring. I also need just per
fleet.

Anyway, I realize that I do not need a combined fleet scoring so I
will keep the fleets into separate serie files and threat them as
separate events. I will score by club and score all competitors in 1
group for each fleet/event.

I guess the long term solution would be to have the possibility to
group the score by various fields at the same. But may be my situation
is unusual and do not worth the effort, which is legitimate.

Thanks

Subject: [sailwave] Re: Fleet Scoring for PHRF

Thanks

Claude

It is just a matter of setting things up in the first place. If you care to send me a copy of the scoring rules from your Sailing Instructions together with some example race results and competitor information, I will try and set up a sample file for you to get you going.

Kind regards,

The problem is that I need to score by fleet and byb club at the same

Anyway, I realize that I do not need a combined fleet scoring so I
will keep the fleets into separate serie files and threat them as
separate events. I will score by club and score all competitors in 1
group for each fleet/event.

I guess the long term solution would be to have the possibility to
group the score by various fields at the same. But may be my situation
is unusual and do not worth the effort, which is legitimate.

Thanks

I have not used this myself yet but this may be what you are
looking for

By application of main scoring systems & use of the various columns,
which you can change to
whatever title you want, you can score by groups & sub groups

Also, have a look at race starts (edit race)
This allows you to select boats who satisfy criteria in two columns

Don’t forget to think ‘outside the box’ re these SW options.
They are not just options for multiple starts on the water, but also
a means of selecting groups of
boats, identified in various columns

Make sure that you change the view to Finishes or whatever data you

Then chose File\Export series to windows clipboard
When you have selected your columns & copied to clipboard, open up

Perhaps someone else can help with your PHRF/formula query

I am new to Sailwave and I spend an afternoon looking at the software
(version 1.93, build 3) and this user group to see if it fits my
needs. It is a good software and looks promissing but I am not sure it
will do want I want.

We are running an inter club (2 clubs) championship that will run the
whole summer and will be divided in series. We need to create various
scorings; the list is:

  • one scoring per fleet per club per serie
  • one scoring per fleet per serie for the combined 2 clubs
  • one scoring per fleet per club for the season
  • one scoring per fleet for the season

this means that I need to be able to select boats based on 2 fields,
which appears not to be possible, unless I am wrong. This is for the
club/inter club issue. On the serie vs season issue; I have no idea
how to do this.

On another aspect; I need to be able to export to Excel. Is there a

to clipboard data?

Finally, something thay I know how to fix but our handicaper is
telling me that the PHRF formula is c = e * r (faster boats have a
higher r). The numbers he gives me corespond to that formula. Is it an
usual formula?

Thanks

You don’t need scoring rules just to score by fleet. In Sailwave
you can
score by any field, fleet, club, agegroup etc at any time - the
applied
scoring system will be applied to all fleets, clubs, agegrousps etc.
You
only need to add a scoring rule as necessary; for example if the
rating

system changes for one or more of the fleets, clubs, agegroups etc
etc.

Hi,

I found a way to control if boats from a given club is included in the
results or not by using the exclude field. For example, I set exclude
for the boats of club A and get the results for club B and then remove
the exclude for the club A members and set it for the club B members
and get the results for club A. Finally, I remove all exlcudes and get
results for both clubs combined.

I can use the "set competitor field" to activate (i.e. use value 1)
the exclude for all the boats of a given club in one operation.
However, using the same tool to remove it (using value 0) does not
work. Is the value to remove the exclude not 0? Is this a bug?

Thanks

Claude

Subject: [sailwave] Re: Fleet Scoring for PHRF

Thanks

Claude

Claude,

It is possible to score by many different fields, so one file can

produce

the following when set up
  a.. results by club
b.. results for all boats sailing irrespective of club
c.. results for each class sailing
  d.. results by fleet, i.e PHRF1, PHRF2, PHRF3
  e.. results for lady helms
  f.. results for age groups
  g.. results for nationalities
so basically you can produce results for any of the fields for a

competitor

on the first two tabs of the competitor information

It is just a matter of setting things up in the first place. If you

care to

send me a copy of the scoring rules from your Sailing Instructions

together

with some example race results and competitor information, I will

try and

set up a sample file for you to get you going.

Kind regards,

The problem is that I need to score by fleet and byb club at the same
time, i.e. get a per club and per fleet scoring.

  Thanks
