Flights (1.57)

I am learning/testing the flights facility prior to hosting a two day
event in April for approx 150 boats.
I have allocated boats to 4 flights (using the flights column) then
set up 2 starts in 6 races based upon a Round Robin.
My test data (8 entrants) has involved entering sail numbers in the
order that they crossed the line & the Sail No wizard neatly sorts
out the correct finishing places for boats in each flight - BRILLIANT.
In this test, I chose to miss entering one boat which was obviously
scored as DNC when I scored the race.

The problem arises when the DNC boat queries the results & we find
that we have made an input error (or missed them on a massed finish
line) & it should have been given 2nd place.

I can obviously edit the result for that boat but I now have two 2nd
places in that flight.

Aternatively,
I first of all unscored, then
used the 'rearrange recorded places' facility to move everyone down a
place, then
edited the score for the DNC boat to 2nd, then
finished by rescoring the race.

Unfortunately, this method obviously moves all results including the
flight which I don't want to change!!

When dealing with large fleets, recording finishes on the water and
entering results into SW can be quite hectic & mistakes can be made.
I need to be confident that we can amend the results quickly & not
keep competitors waiting because "we have computer problems".

Where am I going wrong?

If the answer is, 1.57 will not deal with it but 1.58 will, I am
reluctant to use 1.58 as it is still in 'Beta mode'
The alternative is to let the Class Association do it themselves on
Sail 100 which I would prefer not to do (for both reasons)

Also, to save me time in testing, how does the tiebreaking deal with
A 8.2 if the tied boats raced in different flights in the last race?

Ralph Tingle

Ralph, The beta on the website has a better position rearranger - the
flight stuff was evolved during the optimist euros and is in the beta
(oct11) - still more to do but it's better than 1.57. CJ.

Thanks Colin
1.58 does just what I wanted
The flights options are great but only after I managed to remember that in coding terms X AND Y
means must satisfy both criteria, not X or Y.

For regular users, once the mistake is spotted it's OK.
For first time users, it may be worth putting a little note over the Field & Value headings to
explain put your flights in vertically NOT horizontally ;-/

Do you have any comments on my tiebreak query?

Hi Ralph,

Don't worry too much about using 1.58 - it is much more stable than 1.57 - I
should have published it as 1.58 given the gap - but I didn't.

WRT tie breaking - Sailwave does nothing special when in flight mode. My
interpretation of the situation is that it a normal series except that some
boats have shared places that are not broken in individual races. But I
would be happy to do something specific if that interpretation is incorrect.

Thanks Colin

Got a bit spooked with the fact that it was Beta & your comments on the web site.
Done some provisional testing & it appears to be spot on.

WRT flights & tie breaking, it is normal to add to SI's the following:
"Rule A8.2 will only apply to scores when the tied boats have been scheduled to sail against each
other" (or something similar)
This is necessary when the last race (of the event or series ie Qualification) is part of a 'Round
Robin' format

Perhaps you could add an 'A8.2 Flights' option to the scoring system when you get time.

Ralph

Ah I see, v useful, thanks Ralph, will do ASAP...

PS: the next beta does not have the limitations of the existing one WRT
specifying 'expressions' for starts. It's a list of field=value (etc - can
use field contains value etc) pairs and you specify whether or not you want
them ALL to apply or ANY one to apply to match a competitor - bit like
Outlook email rules etc. There is also an "advanced" (hate that usage)
option to have multi-expression rules but hopefully that will not bee needed
much. With the adition of a bunch of columns for area, group, age-group
sex, division, team, etc etc it should be fairly easy ot categorise
competitors in starts without using complicated expressions. I'm try to get
the next beta to have the final 'shape' that I want which till not change
again; 1,57 and the current betas got some of the way there, but there is
tons to do. My biggest problem is upgrades - making sure every previous
sailwave file can be opened with the latest version - nightmare...

Regards,
Colin

Hi Ralph,

Just FYI there are some todos WRT flights that Anders has pointed out to me.
I mention them in case you're looking and can't find them.

1. Automatic flight rotations(by a specific method) after N(specifiable)
races.
2. Code methods (e.g. for DNF) based on the number of competitors in a
flight.
3. The seeding tool doesn't always do stuff in the correct order!

No 3 is fixed but not available, 1 and 2 are not done. There are more but
these are the most obvious ones.

Perhaps you could add an 'A8.2 Flights' option to the scoring
system when you get time.

Additional checkbox "Only apply 8.2 to boats in the same start".

Is that the same...

Thanks Colin

Not sure if I understand what you are saying re the next beta.

1.58 already has Field = Value drop down menus.
Your statement of 'lists' 'multi expressions' suggests that you may be moving into HTML coding (if
that is the right term) requiring a file to be edited (similar to templates??)

Over the years, there have been various 'high brow' discussions about editing programs, templates
etc which has frightened a number of people off.
For some, this is a wonderful option to personalise their use of SW but for others they have had to
live with its shortcomings because they cannot or are reluctant to progress to a higher cerebral
level.

A recent thread about strike through on discards was a good example. I am very proficient at Excel
VBA programing but when I tried to change the font as suggested, I realised that being able to speak
'German' is not much use in 'France'
I could understand the approach & logic but have no idea what the word is for say Times Roman or
where to put it (no suggestions please!) & I am reluctant to learn another foreign language!!

The point of this message is to say that SW has always been a wonderfully simple program to use,
whilst at the same time offering the facility for others to move it on to a higher plane.

SW is great as requirements can be set up within the SW screen by clicking on this or that.
If you don't know where to click, there are so many people out there prepared to act as your 'phone
a friend'

Please continue (as you have always done) to remember that KISS has two very desirable meanings!!

Regards
Ralph

Hi Ralph,

WRT flights & tie breaking, it is normal to add to SI's the following:
"Rule A8.2 will only apply to scores when the tied boats have
been scheduled to sail against each
other" (or something similar)
This is necessary when the last race (of the event or series ie
Qualification) is part of a 'Round
Robin' format

Perhaps you could add an 'A8.2 Flights' option to the scoring
system when you get time.

Colin

Hi Ralph,

Don't worry, the long term goal is a very simple but powerful model. WRT
the starts thing, all I meant is that as it stands you are constrained to (I
think) 3 rows and two sets of AND pairs per row - that limitation has gone.
I dislike all arbitrary limitations like that... On simplification, I have
done something about rating files and locales etc - Sailwave now has in
integrated resource manager that controls it all for you and allows you to
get more resources from the internet or your computer network.
