Forums

I've been fiddling in the background with a Sailwave Forums page on the web
site, as suggested by somebody a while ago. If you're interested it can
previewed at http://www.sailwave.com/cgi-bin/ib/ikonboard.cgi. It's powered
by the free Ikonboard scripts. I'm not sure it's worth putting on-line
though - I like the email format of this group, but am aware that others may
prefer the non-invasiveness of a forum and that in fact this is the SUG and
I'm a guest, so I should set something up of my own. Any thoughts?

Regards,
Colin

Hi Colin:

I like the forum format, keeps the dialogue online for all to see and follow
at their own pace.
What I don't like about forums is that I forget to check them out
periodically.

E mails are ok, but sometimes I don't check my e mails every day, when I do
they've piled up to a very annoying amount.

I agree with Rebecca Blanco, the volume of emails is becoming too large and
so I'd vote for the forum which looks promising.

I have had a number of private emails saying the same as Rob and Rebecca -
essentially if you don't log in for a while you get blatted with too many
emails that are deleted rather than read... Simon, (or anybody else) - how
would you feel if we removed the yahoo group and moved to the Sailwave
forums... Ikonboard has some nice features like tracking particular topics
of interest and only showing new messages etc etc, so it may be a bit easier
to personally manage. There is no advertising on this board as it's hosted
on the Sailwave web site. What it will need is some volunteers to be

Personally, I'd vote to keep the email format as it doesn't mean a separate
action to obtain the information. Most email systems allow rules so you can
redirect the [sailwave] messages to their own folder. Forums also require
you to be online, and not everyone has a permanently on connection or even a
"free" one. Forums usually require a higher computer skill level than email.
I also think you'd probably loose the immediacy of responses. Email also
allows me to maintain my own archive of the information.

Best regards - John.

Colin there are obviously many pro's and con's on this issue. Currently
there are 160 members on the SUG with 20 (twenty!!) new joiners over the
past week alone. Biggest recomendation pro tem would be for lurkers to
convert to daily digest (they can allways reply to a digest).
