Please forward to Huw Pierce as I don't have his email address with me.
Rob's latest email has been forwarded to me and I would like to make the
following comments. I am away at sea at present so unable to post
anything on the Users Group, please feel free to post this on my behalf,
I can receive Inwards mail but no S/Sheets or photos please as it is by
Iridium, slow, expensive and will probably be filtered out anyway.

At Napier Sailing Club we have started using SW this season for
recording club racing, for practical and political reasons it is being
run in parallel with the manual handicapping system until December by
Christine Kenah who forwarded me your email. Once everyone has got used
to it, it will be probably be implemented from 1st January 2005.
The Personal Handicapping System we are using had to mirror the
existing Manual System as closely as possible :
The H'cp No is derived from: Handicap No = Fastest Time ( Winner's
Elapsed Time) / Elapsed Time for Competitor
1st Race H'Cp from previous season
2nd Race Mean of (H'cp Calculated For Race + Previous Season)
3rd Race Mean of (H'cp Calculated For Race 3 + H'cp Nos for
previous two races)
4th Race Mean of (H'cp Calculated For Race 4 + H'cp Nos for
previous three races -( worst result))
5th Race Mean of (H'cp Calculated For Race 5 + H'cp Nos for
previous four races -( best and worst result))
This follows on through the season using the last 5 races sailed so on
the 6th race the H'cp from the previous season is dropped.
New entrants to the class are awarded a H'cp after the first race which
is the mean of H'cp of the boats that finished before and after in the
first race. This number is a little discretionary and the Scorer can
modify it.
Handicaps are calculated in an Excel S/S, with the start and competitors
finishing times for each race being recorded, the rest is automatic
producing a current h'cp, the sheet is then kept continuously updated on
a weekly basis.
NSC races and scores 16 different fleets with each class racing from 4
to 7 series in a season. The H'cp rating for each series is extracted
via the "Rating Files" for the first race, and applies for the whole
series, a new updated rating is used for the next series etc. The
present scorer is an ex Mats master and keeps track of all this
manually!
There will probably be a few refinements when I return on leave at the
beginning of December, some classes sail two races and there are as many
ideas as there are sailors, with the ideas varying as widely as talent!
I hope that explains the system we use and I am all in favor of a common
integrated system, the S/S is very large as we have been unable to
devise a function that will only refer to the last 5, sometimes widely
spaced races, but it does work. I would attach it but it is 5 MB and
involve serious airtime. I could send it via a land line once we reach
port if anyone is interested. Next stop is Mumbai on Thursday.
I look forward to your comments and will run Rob's system over a trial
set of races to compare results.
Regards
Keith Strudwick
