Getting back into practice

i used to be quite good at Sailwave and at uploading results to the RYA but stopped doing it when they revamped the system earlier in the year. My recollection was that the previous system was extraordinarily capricious and time-consuming and i assumed (from experience) that the new system would be worse. I am, however, prepared to give it another go but rather than having to go through the entire learning process again could someone remind me a) how to download the latest version of sailwave b) (in no more than three sentences) what to do next? And c) there is something in the sailwave explique about date formats (2015/06/30) whereas in edit race I have been using dd/mm/yy which sometimes works. Ta!

Hi George

Marginally better, but even more time consuming (there's an extra

step when you’ve uploaded results) and note that, if you have a race
where, say, 3 fleets started together then you need 3 separate
starts in Sailwave otherwise the PY calc is run on the 3 fleets
together…
and download version 2.18.5 beta
Er, open the download and follow instructions? Then open your
Sailwave file…
In Sailwave, click on Plugins and all is explained (including the
date annoyance).

Thanks for that. It says ‘data has been sent’, but it has not appeared on the site - maybe it takes time to be processed. I also tried to ‘manage my classes’ to remove some duplicates but it won’t take the corrections. Eyes glazing over, interest fading…

Need to look under the Import Data
tab
 (That’s the extra step I mentioned.)

Hi George,

I should appear there immediately.

I assume you read this help on the Sailwave site

http://www.sailwave.com/how-do-i-send-handicap-results-to-the-rya

You should end up with a screen like this

Inline images 1

Accept the OK and then click on the www.pyonline.org.uk link

Login to the site and then It defaults to the View race results but you need to click on Import Data

You should then see your uploads

But if you are getting the Data sent OK - Sailwave is doing its bit !

Hi Jon,

It doesn’t appear immediately and when I do the ‘import data’ thing the screen goes blank. I am past the stage when I will accept that if a website or whatever doesn’t work it ‘must be something you are doing wrong’. When flying my plane if I want the wheels to go down I press the appropriate button and expect the b****y wheels to go down. I do not expect to have to examine the online help menu for tips. I accept that this is probably not a Sailwave problem. What might be, though, is that I cannot ‘reply’ to your emails through my email client (Windows Mail) because I ‘may have violated’ some protocol or other, I have to do it via the Yahoo site which doesn’t seem to mind,

If you really want to get
hot under the collar, George, take a look at what the PY site
does with the derived PY numbers for each class (click on the
graph symbol against a class under the PY Summary tab) - is a
6th order polynomial fit over time really needed to get a good
estimate of a boat class’ performance? Makes a complete and
absolute mockery of the PYS Number Recommendation Report, which
I am really surprised that Bas Edmonds has lent signature to!

Well by the time I login it is there in the Import Data

If you are getting the Data sent then the site has confirmed it has received it. Are you logging in after you have sent the data or are you logging into the pyonline before sending it and expecting the screen to refresh? If so if you type Control F5 it will refresh.

As for replying from your email client - I guess it is because the email address you are sending from is not an email address registered with the Sailwave User Group.

A ‘sixth order polynomial’ - how exciting! - and there was me thinking it was something to do with my mast rake. Is the final ‘normalisation’ achieved by dividing everything by the square root of minus infinity like they do in String Theory?

Well thanks for the help - I now have the system eating out of my hand. It is a bit more than ‘one extra step’, though; I reckon the sequence after pressing the link to the PYS website is:

login

import data tab

import (icon)

Import (button)

screen goes blank

go back to Import Data and repeat steps three and four for each race in the series. But I find the output (the graph) absolutely fascinating - I can see myself getting slower as I get older!

Now, what do I have to do to get the website to let me contribute to it from Windows Mail (not that I should have to, now that I am so totally on top of the system)?

Hi George

You email address that is registered with the Sailwave User Group is your gmail email address when you send from Windows Mail what email address does it come from. It must be the gmail account - If you are using a different email then you either need to change the email address associated with the SUG or I guess you could have two profiles
