Getting Started FAQ update?

There must have been some discussion here describing how to "Get Started" with these 1.8x
versions but I sure can't find it.

If it's there, I'd sure appreciate someone pointing me in the right direction - or, if someone
could define a short (or long) "how-to" for the latest version?

Thanks,

Scott

Hi Scott,

As things have changed from 1.57 to 1.83 so the discussion has taken place;
it's not all in one place but spread though the messages.

Voice your queries and I'm sure we'll be able to help. Also I would be
interested to know what confuses (excuse the word - can't think of a better
one) the most jumping from 1.57 to 1.8*. The main differences are that you
can set up N scoring systems and that the concept of fleets has been sucked
into the scoring systems themselves and generalised.

Thanks, Colin...

Oh, confused describes it pretty well... I have successfully used 1.57 a few times awhile
back, but I'm not that experienced with the program to begin with. I'm sure some of my
confusion is valid with EITHER version.

First, my mission is to score a Hobie regatta this weekend. I'm sure I could work it out with
the older version so maybe that would be better than trying to learn the new in a hurry? or
maybe the latest edition is so much improved and not so different to use that it would be
worth it learn now?

I think there are 3 basic issues I'm unclear on... and probably more as I learn more of what
I don't know.

The first hurdle for me to get over is understanding whether "Fleet" means the same thing
to me as it does to this version of the program. And how the Column Names of Boat, Flight
and Class relate to Fleet. Then, next, the phrase "Everybody scored as one group" confuses
me. Then "Publishing". (Why not just a straight Print command?)

In our regatta, we will have Hobie 14, 16, 18, 20, Tiger and possibly some Inter 20s. There
is no timing or distance scoring... strictly order of finish.
Within each boat type will be skill level classifications, such as 16A, 16B, 16C, 16Novice. I
think of each of these (ie. 16A, B, C, N) as a "Fleet" that we want to score separately... that
thinking worked in 1.57 but I'm not sure if it does in the newer version. I never used Boat,
Flight or Class before but should I have? or should I now?

Let's just start there and see where we are.

Thanks for your help,

Scott

Hi Scott,

First, my mission is to score a Hobie regatta this weekend. I'm
sure I could work it out with
the older version so maybe that would be better than trying to
learn the new in a hurry? or
maybe the latest edition is so much improved and not so different
to use that it would be
worth it learn now?

I would stick with 1.57 for now.

I think there are 3 basic issues I'm unclear on... and probably
more as I learn more of what
I don't know.

The first hurdle for me to get over is understanding whether
"Fleet" means the same thing
to me as it does to this version of the program. And how the
Column Names of Boat, Flight
and Class relate to Fleet. Then, next, the phrase "Everybody
scored as one group" confuses
me. Then "Publishing". (Why not just a straight Print command?)

In 1.57 (i've installed it to look!) Fleet has a special meaning, the other
fields are just there for you to use as you like, you can change the
columns names. Publish is because I create HTML files and load them into
your prowser rather than doing DIY printing.

In our regatta, we will have Hobie 14, 16, 18, 20, Tiger and
possibly some Inter 20s. There
is no timing or distance scoring... strictly order of finish.
Within each boat type will be skill level classifications, such
as 16A, 16B, 16C, 16Novice. I
think of each of these (ie. 16A, B, C, N) as a "Fleet" that we
want to score separately... that
thinking worked in 1.57 but I'm not sure if it does in the newer
version. I never used Boat,
Flight or Class before but should I have? or should I now?

That sounds OK. Sach 16A etc will be a fleet because you want 1-N for each
of these. So create a fleet record for each and score by fleet. In
Sailwave 1.57 a 'fleet' is just a groups of boats that you want seperate
results for.

Colin

If you want to move to 1,8*, perhaps use the results of your regatta as a
starting point and model it in the new versions. There is not much tme to
do it now.. My fault sorry been tied up all day...
