SW includes a new feature. Jon
made a modification to the Custom rating system. The boat parameters Rating ®
and NewRating (n) are available for formulating corrected time. Now it is
possible to use the ORC Performance Line Scoring method without extra tricks.
Our club used this SW version
in a 170 keel boat race with different fleets (pursuit SRS, ORC and IRC) over
the Gulf of Finland in the night (from Finland to Estonia). Our promise to the competitors about the
preliminary results was: “when the boat crosses the finishing line, the result comes
on-line”. One day before the start we prepared
the SW file and published it on the competition website and all the boats had the
code “Waiting” in the result column.
After the boat crossed the finishing line, the committee boat immediately
updated the finish time, rescored and published the results using ftp.
The
ORC Performance Line method needs 2 boat specific parameters: PLT and PLD. The
formula for corrected time is c = (PLT * e) – (PLD * d).
This
is a recipe for SW:
enter data in the boat data fields: Rating=PLT (r in the
custom formula) and NewRating = PLD (n in the custom formula).
click Scoring system on the menu line, then the Rating
System tab, then choose Custom (see Custom rating system tab), then click the
Custom rating system tab, write the following formula in the first box:
(re)-(nd)
This
is applicable if the race includes only one fleet. If the race includes several fleets with
different rating rules, you have to use a fleet specific custom formula.
Remark:
This feature is included in SW version 2.21.1.
I received this version directly from Jon Eskdale. The latest version on
the SW website is 2.19.8. Jon could
comment on this.

The 2017 certificate design is also slightly changed,
with Time-on-Distance ratings shown now for Triple Number ratings,
and the Performance Line scoring option has been removed.

So this method does not use the triple number ratings, correct?
As far as I can tell we need a mechanism to apply the wind range to each boat’s triple number rating array and use the appropriate one to score that race. If I am not mistaken the PLT/PLD solution you outline above does not utilize the triple number ratings, correct?
Is there any plan to support them, or any existing method I am overlooking besides hand-entering the rating corresponding to the wind range after the race has been run, which is clearly sub-optimal?
The PLT/PLD solution was for ORC Performance line rating system
which ORC has discontinued in 2017 as a previous poster in this
thread reported. Sailwave cannot cope with triple numbers
scenario for Performance Line where
c = (PLTe)–(PLDd)
Sailwave can use WInd Indexed ratings files, this functionality
was provided to support US Sailing PY wind indexed ratings. So it
should be possible to do same for ORC ToT & ToD Triple
ratings separately, BUT not combined in one so a Performance Line
like equation could be used.

I am unfamiliar with the concept of wind indexed ratings files and their use. I’ll see what I can find on that unless you can point me to documentation of some sort.
Our goal is to be able to score races using the ORC Club cert triple numbers (ToD or ToT) which requires a wind index be chosen for a given race and the corresponding rating for each competitor be used to calculate corrected time. We have in the past used PHRF ToT with wind indexing but in that case the same adjustment factor is applied to all competitors in the race. With ORC the adjustment factor is built into the triple numbers and therefore differs between boats.
Do you believe it is possible to achieve this specific goal given the current design of Sailwave? Will wind indexed ratings files make it possible?

I think you have hit on it Huw. For our purposes it appears that enabling wind indexed ratings for our ORC fleet solves the problem. We provide the triple numbers from each competitor’s ORC Club certificate in the competitor settings. When a race is scored a wind index is selected for that race and Sailwave chooses the corresponding rating for each competitor. Perfect! In the past we have used wind indexing for PHRF ToT scoring in which case all competitors get the same correction factor based on the wind range. I was unaware that the same mechanism could be used to select a rating per competitor. I also verified that we can set the regatta up to default to PHRF ratings and override scoring for the ORC fleet alone. I think this solves all our problems, thank you!
I have been thinking about this some more and I think with the right
labelling [when you enter them on the Ratings tab of Series scoring]
you would be able to have the triple ratings for both
Coastal/Inshore and Windward/Leeward for each competitor.
I will be interested to hear how you get on.
Kind regards,
Huw
