Handicaps

Dear whoever can help me!

some how i have ended up with the job of handicaping our fleet, thats another story.

I have been recording our results and working them out with the victorian yardstick system, and that has not been a problem. but we also want to have the results via handicap.

the way i see it, i have two problems. firstly is getting the handicap system to work at all, i have followed the instructiuons i found, and i am sure the problem im am having is realted to not applying the handicap tot he first race, but i cant work out how to stop it doing that.

the second problem i have is our season is made up of a number of series, and they are sort of mixed through the season, so from week to week we are sailing different series. to date i have been keeping a seperate file for each series, but this doesnt lend itself to having a handicap updating from week to week.

basically i feel like i have a mess and i would lke some clue how to go about sorting it out.

cheers

(7) Using the ratings in Sailwave Race Scoring Software
First set the scoring properties. Go to SCORING SYTEM, RACE SCORING
click CUSTOM. Enter the following formulae C=E*R, E=C/R and R=C/E. Click
the TEST button to make sure they are functioning.

Enter the boats elapsed times using the SAIL NUM WIZARD. You must input
minutes decimal and then the seconds. Six seconds must be entered as 06.

Then double click on the elapsed time of first boat. Click the RATING
tab. Input your calculated rating for that skipper in the OVERIDE WITH
box. Do so for the rest of the competitors.

Click SCORE (F9) and this should do the trick. If you uncheck the CUSTOM
button and set scoring system to NONE you will get the scratch results.
Remember to rescore after the change. This way you need only one race
file and thus enter data only once to calculate both the scratch and
handicap positions. You can do it for different fleets within the same
race.

Note that when you are calculating a series Race 1 should be excluded
from the handicap series as you won't have a rating for the first race.

Thanks for the tips Jim, I have now started a separate file for handicaps,
so it progress's naturally form week to week.

I have been going over and over the handicap instructions, and for the life
of me i cant see what i am doing wrong, from what i understand the program
automatically produces the "r" figure but for some reason its not putting
it in the right spot.

can some one please have a look at my handicap file and tell me where I'm
going off the rails?

Cheers

Darren.

ps. i love everything else about sailwave, and i am actively trying to get
our club to donate.

Darren,

Here is what we do at the Surrey Sailing Club in Canada....

Just like you, we may have a couple of series (ie July Series and Wednesday
Night Series) going at the same time that we may have a Trophy regatta (1 or
2 days) in there as well.

We score all of our Trophy races using Portsmouth Yardstick, but our Series
races are scored using our SSC Handicap. This is basically a rolling
average from previous races (trophy or Series) all re-scored using the PY.

What we have done is setup a series called "SSC Handicap" and as each Series
or Trophy is completed, we merge this Series or Trophy into the SSC Handicap
When merging we only are interested in the Helmsman/Class combination
otherwise it would get way too complicated and we would rather be sailing
than tweaking a handicap to the nth degree.

After we have around 100 races in the "SSC Handicap" Series file, for every
new set of races added we would remove the same number from the beginning.
Let's say that we merge in 5 new races then we would delete race numbers 1
through 5 after the merge. This keeps the average rolling.

After the merge and purge, update the ratings from the latest rating file
and re-score the "SSC Handicap" series. Then view the race results as RWin
instead of points or time. Next Export the file to Clipboard and paste it
into your spreadsheet file. There you can do whatever math you want. We
find the average RWin and then subtract 90% of 1/2 of the standard deviation
from the average to come up with the new Handicap for the helmsman.

Lastly, we then update our Sailwave Series Template file with the new
handicaps. Now when the RC start a new Series the copy the Series Template
file as the new Series and then they are using the latest Handicaps.

I'm sure there are easier methods or that there might be a more streamline
way of doing it, but this works quite well.

Regards
Jim

Hi Darren,

Auto personal handicap facilities will appear at some time. NB: you didn't
attach your rating file. As usual there are a zillion things I want to do
and have previously promised, but little time to do it all...

Colin
