Help for a Rookie Please - scoring with multiple race result instances

Hi there,

We're in the middle of the 2006 Sydney International Regatta and have an
issue with the scoring for the Laser fleet.

The fleet is racing as different groups in flights each race but needs
to be scored as an overall fleet result.

I have the system set to allow input of multiple instances of race
results, which it's very happy to do.

The problem is that the points allocated and summed are not looking the
way we'd like them: for instance 1st place is being scored as one point
(no problem), 2nd place is scored as 3 points, 5th place is scored as 9
points, 11th place is scored as 21 points, 24th place is scored as 47
points.

I need help to set the system to Sum the points as they are entered and
not resolve ties until the series is finished, please...and I will be oh
SO SO SO grateful if anyone helps me with this. (Have posted the
Sailwave file - Sydney International Regatta - for your information.)

Cheers and thanks

Kristen

Hi Kristen

I had a look at the provisional results for Lasers on the SIR web site & initially was confused as you are showing 4 flights.

I eventually worked out that there are 2 starts so presumably, you are rotating which flights start with each other

I think you may be viewing the results as ‘scored rank’ instead of ‘scored points’

This is a misleading aspect of SW which confuses many people.

For your purposes, view as ‘finishes’ or ‘scored points’ (with or without codes) & you will be OK.

Hope this solves your problem

Ralph

PS

Give my regards to Andrew Wilde & Mike Simms if you happen to come across them

Hi Kristen

Now that I have a copy of your file, I can see where the problem lies.

First of all, I would not advise mixing flight racing with single fleet racing, all in one file.

Secondly, you are correct in selecting the option to allow multiple 1sts, 2nds etc but because you scored all Lasers based upon the class field, SW logic ‘assumes’ that it is a single start race & so there must have been actual race ties for 1st, 2nd etc. This logic therefore decides that if there were two 1sts, then the next placed boat (with a 2nd) must be scored 3 points and so on.

The way to stop this happening is to set up multiple starts for each race so that each start is scored with the correct points.

When you score the series as one group the point will be correct ie two boats with 1 point, 2 boats with 2 points etc

I have attached a file for Lasers only and if you look at race 1, you will see that I have set up two starts & the points are now correct for that race.

I have not amended races 2 & 3 as not sure if I have got the flight colour pairings right.

To set up starts, right click on the race number title & select Edit race.

You can then click on ‘New’ to add an extra start

Then ‘Edit’ the start & in the next window, click on ‘Select competitors’

When you have selected the flights for this start, click on ‘Test’ to make sure that you have set up details correctly

Hope this solves your problem.

If you are still in trouble, send me an email & I will have a look before leaving for the office tomorrow - in the UK, we are 11 hours behind you

Hi Ralph,

Thank you very much for your reply to Kristen. I was setting up a
similar event, and got into the same problem. Then I logged in here
to see if there was a known issue... Thanks again.

Then one question: I'm using different flights for qualifying races.
The qualifyer goes to finals which will be in one fligth, and the
boats carry their points into the finals. What is the easiest way to
define the finalists? In my test file, I just manually placed the the
qualifying skippers in a new flight and ignored the rest. Is there
an automated method for doing this, based on number of boats I have
defined to go into the finals?

Thanks,
Harald

PS! Have used sailwave for a year at VSK Nordic - a club for Virtual
Skipper 4. Until now, only in a basic way. I'm very happy that it
also supports the more advanced methods, like described above, which
will be used for the Nordic VSK4 Championship 2007.

Hi Harald

Does the following help?

3. FINALS SERIES

3.1 Assign Finals Fleets

At this point, scoring reverts to multiple fleet racing series in Gold, Silver Bronze Fleets etc. The make up of Finals fleets can also vary between different events. Sometimes the top 25 sail in the Gold fleet & the remainder in ‘n’ equal fleets; in others there are an equal number in each fleet. Also, the Gold fleet may include tied boats for 25th
place.

The Seeding Tool is a good quick way of allocating boats to fleets (or populating a column), especially if the Finals fleets are of an equal size:

· Make sure that results are sorted in ranking order at the end of the Qualification series

· Follow menu of Tools\Seed Competitor Field

· Select the Fleet field (or any other free column) to seed, type in the names of your fleets (usually Gold, Silver etc), select the equal groups method of seeding and finally click on the seed button.

· If you have any special requirements in the SIs, you may need to make manual adjustments at this stage, in the competitor’s record

Finally, publish a Finals flight list as soon as possible, just in case competitors have any valid queries.

3.2 Set up Race Starts

· Right click on the title bar of the first Finals race to display the race details window

· Click on the ‘new’ button to create extra starts

· Double click on the first start (or edit button) to display the first start details

· Click on ‘select competitors’, select ‘Fleet’ (or the free column you used earlier) from the drop down list & the colour of the fleet (type in the colour if it does not appear in the drop down list)

· Click on OK & repeat the process to set up the next starts & fleet colours

· In the bottom left hand corner of the Edit Race window, enter the race numbers for the Finals (ie races in the whole file not F1, F2 etc) and then click on ‘Copy starts’ to copy this start sequence for the whole Finals

Regards

Ralph
