I'm interested in using Cox-Sprague scoring system for our clubs BOTY.
I have downloaded 9.2 and see Rinderle B system. However I feel it may
not fairly score boats who place low in small fleet compared the who
place marginally better in larger fleets.
So, how/or can do I add the formula in the custom high point formula
field.
Thanks
The
difficulty you mention of not scoring boats fairly is solved by the CHIPS
system. You can find the details
on the Chipstead SC website - http://www.chipsteadsc.org.uk/
CHIPS
behaves similarly to Rinderle B but was specifically designed to score boats
fairly throughout the fleet, not just at the top.
This
system has been trialled extensively at Chipstead over the past year, following
which I have made some adjustments to the constants that are used in the formula
to “flatten” the curves a bit more.
I have homed in on the following constants which appear to be optimum:
B = 1.713
C = 0.163
D = 10
K = 1
F = 5.5273
In
addition I have improved the score for a retirement to be equivalent to “last
plus one” place, using the same formula.
If it
would be helpful I can update these details in the SUG Files area, showing the
formula, curves & table of values.
I am not
sure what is Colin’s latest position on including the CHIPS formula in
Sailwave.

Geoff

Hi Steve,
Cox-Sprague is not there yet, it will be at some time but unfortunately I
cannot say when...

Hi Colin
Don’t
forget your intention to include (at some time) CHIPS high point scoring which is
based upon similar principles to Rinderle B but with the advantage of overcoming
precisely the problem mentioned by Steve.

Hi Geoff
I dont understand one part of the formula:-
1 - exp - C*(N-1)
should that be
1 - exp(-C*(N-1))
?

Hi Colin
Yes, in effect the –C*(N-1) is in brackets – i.e. this is the exponent.
I am sure you realise this but just in case - When implementing the
formula remember to ensure you don’t leave a residual “divide by zero” which would
occur if the number of starters were N = 1. The method I have used to remove that possibility can be
seen in the spreadsheet (cell C5) in the CHIPS Scores.xls file in the SUG Files
area. The spreadsheet might be
useful for checking that your formula implementation gives the correct results.
The full document that describes the system is “Definition of CHIPS2”
also in the Files area. (Both
files dated 24 Mar 06)
If you have any further uncertainties then of course do ask.
Cheers
Geoff
