How do you motivate club members to server on Race Committee?

Radio Controlled model yacht clubs and fleets share the same need for Race Committee staffing as our bigger brethren. Running a cumulative point total series each year, skippers are scored at each event with 1 point for participating, and 1 point for each boat beaten in that day’s event. Race Committee Chairman (we usually only need one per event) is awarded points as if he had finished in second place (a big incentive for bottom half fleet members). When final scores are tallied at the end of the year, a 2nd place won by sailing trumps a 2nd place awarded for Race Committee.

Over the past few seasons we have never lacked for volunteers eager to trade a day of sailing for 2nd place cumulative points.

Even top of the fleet skippers will volunteer, because they use the day to maintain their cumulative total, plus get the benefit of being able closely watch the fleet’s behavior, thereby increasing their subsequent ability to deal with starting line maneuvers and mark roundings.

At the beginning of the year our Dinghy and Cruiser Captain get together to decide all dates for the coming year. Once they have entered each date into a calendar, they also draw up a rota for Officer of the Day (OOD) and Safety boats for the Dinghy races.

Luckily we have a few keen safety boat crews who are always pleased to stand in when somebody is not available. On occasions when Race Officer does not turn up we either grab somebody else or get the safety boat to start the race from the water.

The Rota is sent out and people unable to attend the days they are down for must arrange to swap their duties with others on the rota.

Our club also requires each member to complete at least two work parties a year. Work parties normally involve turning up early on a Saturday morning and sweeping the yard, cleaning the slipway, toilets or windows, cooking breakfast in the galley etc.

Doing Race officer or safety boat also counts towards work party.

Members who attend work parties receive £25 discount from their annual bill.

"This is a code where rule A6b applies (other boat scores are not
changed)."

This Scoring code Property option appears not to be working. I'm trying
to turn it off, so that other boat scores are changed.

(I'm assuming it should actually read "This is a code where rule A6.2
applies".)

Regardless of whether I turn this on or off, using Scoring code RDG,
RDGa or RDGb, other boats scores appear to be always 'not changed'.

I've attached the BLW file to demonstrate this w.r.t. Sail No 13911 Race
6 (Note sail No 13933 finished 29 but was disqualified hence all
subsequent places are scored one higher).

Am I setting something incorrectly or is there a bug in the program?

Cheers,
Andy

That isn't a complete quote. Actually, it says "the scores of other boats shall not be changed unless the protest committee decides otherwise." In other words, it is anticipated right in the rule itself that sometimes the scores of other boats should, and will, change. Your scoring program should be able to do that.

I don't have enough expertise with Sailwave to advise how to do this although I'm sure there is a way.

You have total flexibility in sailwave.

Look at Scoring systems, then Scoring codes, and changes cha be done in edit.

You will see a column A6 on or off which controls this aspect of the program.

I assume that the boat receiving redress is Sail No 13911 Dave Burrows from Winsford Flash SC in Race 6.

What were the scoring instructions provided by the Jury under rule 64.2?

Rule 64.2 When the protest committee decides that a boat is entitled to redress under rule 62, it shall make as fair an arrangement as possible for all boats affected, whether or not they asked for redress. This may be to adjust the scoring (see rule A10 for some examples) or finishing times of boats, to abandon the race, to let the results stand or to make some other arrangement. When in doubt about the facts or probable results of any arrangement for the race or series, especially before abandoning the race, the protest committee shall take evidence from appropriate sources.

You have total flexibility in sailwave.

Look at Scoring systems, then Scoring codes, and changes cha be done in edit.

You will see a column A6 on or off which controls this aspect of the program.

As per A6.2, “scores of other boats shall not be changed”

Presumably Sailwave has been set up not to allow this to be overridden (even
though the properties do seem to suggest that it could be done).

“This is a code where rule A6b applies (other boat scores are not
changed).”

This Scoring code Property option appears not to be working. I’m trying
to turn it off, so that other boat scores are changed.

(I’m assuming it should actually read “This is a code where rule A6.2
applies”.)

Regardless of whether I turn this on or off, using Scoring code RDG,
RDGa or RDGb, other boats scores appear to be always ‘not changed’.

I’ve attached the BLW file to demonstrate this w.r.t. Sail No 13911 Race
6 (Note sail No 13933 finished 29 but was disqualified hence all
subsequent places are scored one higher).

Am I setting something incorrectly or is there a bug in the program?

Cheers,
Andy

Yes that’s correct.

That 13911 should recieve an average of his scores and that the part of the fleet that finished with a greater score be re-scored. So theoretically if rule A6.2 is unchecked in Sailwave it should re-score, bumping everyone up a point, but it doesn’t seem to change anything.

The Jury instructions are somewhat confusing.

Firstly it states “That 13911 should receive an average of his scores”. The average of 13911 scores for all races is 34.3. I don’t understand why you are trying to assign a fixed number of points to 13011, the code you are using assigns 37 points as the race score.

It then states that *"*and that the part of the fleet that finished with a greater score be re-scored." What does this mean, It is not clear how the remaining competitors are to be rescored? Are points to be added to the other competitors?

Colin,

There does appear to be a problem creating a redress scoring code inserts a boat into a specific place in a race and moves the other competitors down. Checking the box “This is a code where rule A6b applies” doesn’t appear to make a difference in circumstances when it appears it should.

Andy,

The Jury provided unclear scoring instructions and I would ask for clarification, but given what you have I would interpret the Jury’s scoring instructions as follows.

“That 13911 should receive an average of his scores”.

Calculate the average of 13911 scores for all completed races. This means that the average will change as additional races are completed in the series.

After six races 13911’s average was 38.40, after 7 races 36.17, after 8 races 35.86, after nine races 34.25.

“and that the part of the fleet that finished with a greater score be re-scored.”

This is the part I struggle with… It seems to imply that after Race 6 boats placing 39th or lower in Race 6 will be rescored, after Race 7 we will also need to rescore the 38th and 37th place boats, after Race 8 the 36th place boat; and after Race 9 the 35th place boat. How they are to be rescored is unclear.

I would ask the Jury to clarify the scoring instructions.

Yes that’s correct.

That 13911 should recieve an average of his scores and that the part of the fleet that finished with a greater score be re-scored. So theoretically if rule A6.2 is unchecked in Sailwave it should re-score, bumping everyone up a point, but it doesn’t seem to change anything.

Look at Scoring systems, then Scoring codes, and changes cha be done in edit.

Cheers,
Andy

Colin,

I am unable to make the “This is a code when A6b applies (other boats scores are changed)” work in the manner I was expecting. In Race 1 Cal20 72 is given redress, and reinstated into 2nd position, and all other boats are to be moved down.

The redress scoring code was setup to set points by hand and “This is a code when A6b applies (other boats scores are changed)” was not checked. I was expecting boats finishing 2nd, 3rd, etc to move down by one place. However, although Cal20 72 is scored correctly the other boats scores did not change, see attached results.

Am I using the correct method to score the race given the protest committee’s findings?

I can get around it by just scoring him in 2nd place but then there is no indication that the competitor received Redress.

It then states that *"*and that the part of the fleet that finished with a greater score be re-scored." What does this mean, It is not clear how the remaining competitors are to be rescored? Are points to be added to the other competitors?

That 13911 should recieve an average of his scores and that the part of the fleet that finished with a greater score be re-scored. So theoretically if rule A6.2 is unchecked in Sailwave it should re-score, bumping everyone up a point, but it doesn’t seem to change anything.

Cheers,
Andy

When a Protest Committee reinstates a boat I would normally just put the boat back into their original finish position. However in your case they are being given average points. In other cases a boat is given a position different to their finish position. For example, if a competitor is fouled approaching the finish, the PC determines that they had a clearly established position, they might give the boat redress of their established position, rather than average points. I have tried scoing both these scenarios and the A6b option does not appear to work, or at least in the maner I thought it would.

Has anyone in the group successfully scored a race similar to those described above? How did you do it?

Hi Mark,

Just to let you and everyone else know, Colin is highly unlikely to

respond to messages this week as he is away at the Dart Worlds in
Weymouth competing Kind regards,
Huw

···

Colin,

I am unable to make the

“This is a code when A6b applies (other boats scores are
changed)” work in the manner I was expecting. In Race 1 Cal20 72 is given
redress, and reinstated into 2nd position, and all other
boats are to be moved down.

            The redress scoring code

was setup to set points by hand and “This is a code when
A6b applies (other boats scores are changed)” was not
checked. I was expecting boats finishing 2nd, 3rd, etc
to move down by one place. However, although Cal20 72 is
scored correctly the other boats scores did not change,
see attached results.

            Am I using the correct

method to score the race given the protest committee’s
findings?

I can get around it by just

scoring him in 2nd place but then there is no indication
that the competitor received Redress.

I struggle with… It seems to imply that
after Race 6 boats placing 39th or lower in
Race 6 will be rescored, after Race 7 we
will also need to rescore the 38th and 37th
place boats, after Race 8 the 36th place
boat; and after Race 9 the 35th place boat.
How they are to be rescored is unclear.

                        I would ask the

Jury to clarify the scoring instructions.

                  Firstly

it states * “That 13911
should receive an average of his scores”* .
The average of 13911 scores for all races is
34.3. I don’t understand why you are trying
to assign a fixed number of points to 13011,
the code you are using assigns 37 points as
the race score.

It then states that "* and that
the part of the fleet that finished with a
greater score be re-scored."* What does
this mean, It is not clear how the remaining
competitors are to be rescored? Are points to
be added to the other competitors?

it shall make as fair an arrangement as
possible for all boats affected, whether

  • “That 13911 should receive an average of his scores”*.

Calculate the average of 13911 scores for all completed races. This means that the average will change as additional races are completed in the series.

After six races 13911’s average was 38.40, after 7 races 36.17, after 8 races 35.86, after nine races 34.25.

" and that the part of the fleet that finished with a greater score be re-scored."

Hi, this is off topic as we don't use sailwave for the overall results in this series but you guys are my best hope....

We have a "fun handicap series" - aim to get non-racers racing. Its very much about doing a race. it lets OODs get a chance to try setting a course and no-one minds if they do silly things (although the week I set a down wind start they did object! I put the letters up back to front on the board!)

Anyway - we have OODs running anything from 2 to 5 races depending on the weather, the numebr of boats on the water and the course they pick.

Its scored high points but not sure that matters.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a discard system from this type of event? i.e. if you ahve a really good day and win with 5 races on the same day and soeone else wins with 2 the next week is winning the five fair?
