Hello,
I am trying to figure out which scoring is best to determine the top Junior sailor of a 2 day, up to 5 race regatta. The regatta may have 8-10 fleets all of which may have Junior sailors. The fleets have different number of boats from 5 up to 20.
Low Point scoring seems to favor sailors in smaller fleets while High Point scoring seems to favor sailors in larger fleets.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Jerry
Hi Jerry
The National School Sailing Association (NSSA) has across the board age prizes which are based on calculating a factor of regatta position ÷ number of boats in their fleet, with the lowest factor winning.
This probably reduces the anomalies between high/low point scoring but most important of all, ranking 1st out of 10 being better than 1st out of 5.
All the results were exported to Excel which made it easier to calculate the factor & sort the data accordingly. There may be a way to do all the calculations in SW but that is an area I left to my betters
I did try this principle with a Sailability regatta, which has fleet sizes similar to yours, where we awarded a trophy for the ‘best’ result over all fleets. Unfortunately, there was one fleet which always won the trophy because they always had the most competitors
Hope this helps
Regards
Ralph
