Import with Different Ratings by Race

Hi all,

I've just started using SailWave and it's been great so far. I am having trouble determining or implementing the best way to adapt the program to our sailing club.

We have a series that lasts several months. We use a high point scoring system and the US Portsmouth handicapping system. I have all that figured out.

My problem is that we score the series by skipper, not boat. We encourage participation and people routinely sail different boats - both different types of boats with different handicaps and different sail numbers of the same type boat.

I have the results in csv files right now. I've tried importing them several ways, but I can't get it to accept races with different ratings for one competitor. Instead, it creates a new competitor associated with each combination of HelmName and Rating.

I've been importing with HelmName, RaceNo, Elapsed, and Rating and allowing it to create competitors as they're imported. I've tried making the skipper's name as the SailNo as well, to no avail.

Any thoughts on the best way to just get one competitor and allow the ratings to change from race to race? It can be somewhat manual, just need a way to do it.

Thanks,

Brad

Hi,

I started to use Sailwave about a year ago, and had exactly
the same problem, as my Club scores its series by competitor, rather than by
boat, too.

The solution I have arrived at is to create the competitor
with whatever boat he sails first, with all the data correct for that boat,
then when he changes to a different boat, to use the facility to set a rating
for the particular race using the tab in “Edit Competitor”. Of
course when you publish the results that looks odd, as the type and name of
boat are not correct. We like to include the name of boat and sail number in
our results tables, so I use the “Notes” page for the race to
indicate that Competitor A sailed a boat of type X in Race Y, competitor B
sailed a boat of type Z, etc. Alternatively, you could publish your race
results with just the helm name and the handicap figure.

Last year, I edited the name of the boat each time a competitor
changed boats, but that has the effect that the newly edited name appears for
all the results every time you publish a new set of results for the whole
series, so it isn’t really any better than leaving the original boat name
in place. It’s not a good idea to change the class, as that puts the
handicap for the new class back into all the earlier results for which the
default handicap for the old class was used!

Colin did say when we had the flurry of discussion on the
topic last year that scoring a series by competitor was something which could
be added to a future version of Sailwave, but I guess that version is still
some way in the future!

Hope this helps!

Sorry – the race rating is in a tab on the “Edit
Result” window, rather than “Edit Competitor” as I said below
(Right click on the result for the particular competitor in the race in
question)

In the results tab just enter the PY of the boat sailed in a particular race in the race rating field. In the boat field it will still show the boat sailed in the first race you entered into sailwave, however you will be able to apply the race ratings for any change of boats.

Thanks for the input. I came across the same hack/solution as you mentioned.

My issue is importing results from a CSV. When I import race results and include the rating it creates a new competitor for the HelmName with the new rating. Is there any way around that so it'll add it to the existing competitor and update the rating for that race?
