There is a rather cryptic sentence in the How Do I Import a Competitor List FAQ which reads “It does not facilitate the merging of those competitors already in the series with those in the CSV file.”
What does that mean exactly? Suppose I have a competitor already defined, uniquely identified by class and sailno and helmed by John Smith. If I then import a file containing a row with the same class/sailno but helmed by Jill Jones do I end up with two competitors with the same class/sailno but helmed by different people or with one class/sailno helmed by Jill Jones? Or something else.
The FAQ needs updating - that was written before I added this screen. What it used to do was always delete all the competitors before it imported the new ones. Effectively the same as ticking the first box like in the image below.
You can now merge with the them based on the criteria as shown below the third box gives you one of 4 options. I can’t remember off the top of my head which version these were added in - make sure you have a recent version.

Thanks, Jon. Sounds good but unfortunately I can’t see how good it looks because I don’t get the image. Perhaps I should install SW and see for myself!
I assumed you were using the Help information on the Sailwave web
site with an installed copy of Sailwave
Unfortunately we have noticed that images attached to SUG messages
do not appear when looking at the messages via the SUG and may not
appear in some email clients depending on user settings or the
client email application.
Yes - Images get transferred to emails so if you have subscribed to the posts the images will get forwarded to you but the forum software does not display in line images for some reason.
The screen shot is however available on the Sailwave site if you go to the download Betas and look at 2.12.1 there is the documentation there for it as well

Thanks, found it but I’m still not seeing an answer to my original question.
Suppose I have a competitor in the list with class/sailno/helm as, say, RS200/1234/John Eskdale and I want to correct that by importing a file containing RS200/1234/Jon Eskdale. Will that work? It looks to me as if you can match on class/sailno and either ignore matches so I still have only RS200/1234/John Eskdale, or accept matches so I get both RS200/1234/John Eskdale and RS200/1234/Jon Eskdale.
So is it an INSERT with or without DELETE whereas what I am hoping for is an UPDATE?
Thanks, found it but I'm still not seeing an answer to my

Just wondering what the typical use would be of what you are trying to do. Typically you have some entry system from which you can produce a csv file.
So lets take a typical scenario.
Entries are done in some other system and this data is imported into Sailwave to publish an entry list.
If corrections are made on this other system then just reimport the whole list
If corrections are made within Sailwave then the idea is that you can then just import the new entries
The idea of an update is not very easy as how does Sailwave know which is the correct data to match.
Sometimes the Sailno might be correct and others it might be the Name - or even both wrong.
If you want to select which ones you want to reimport you can just delete them from Sailwave and re import them all with is set to ignore matching on say SailNo and Name
Perhaps you could explain the scenario that you are thinking about.
