Importing competitors from Sailwave file deletes another competitor

I’ve recently been setting up our Summer series sailwave file (first race was last week) and ran into a few issues. In past years, this has been smooth, but this season was not.

One issue that came to light was that one competitor was unexpectedly deleted from the series. Having been working on the setup late at night, I originally chalked it up to ‘finger problems’, but I’ve since discovered that Sailwave was actually deleting a competitor when I used the 'import competitors from Sailwave file" feature.

Here’s how it goes:

  1. open file “new Summer series (base file)”
  2. sort on ‘boat’. I’m not certain that this is an important step, but it makes it easier to see what’s happening.
  3. add new competitors using “Import new competitors from a Sailwave file” and browse to file “last season Summer file (competitor source)”.
  4. select boats “Evenflow” and “Tabula Rasa” for import and finish the import.

At this point, I’ve had two things happen. Usually, both Evenflow and Tabula Rasa are added. However, I’ve also had it add Tabula Rasa and Balance! (not Evenflow)

Assuming that both Evenflow and Tabula Rasa have been added, I now see that Evenflow is not properly sorted. It is out of order (seems to be below whichever boat was previously selected).
Selecting Evenflow, I find that the banner shows that “Tornado” is the selected boat. Tabula Rasa seems to be sorted properly and shows properly as the selected boat in the banner.

  1. Save the series as a new name (e.g. ‘updated’), just to ensure the base file isn’t clobbered.
  2. Close Sailwave and open the file saved in Step 5 (‘updated’).

At this point, I see that Evenflow and Tabula Rasa are in the file, but “Tornado” has now mysteriously disappeared! (it was shown on the screen prior to the save/close).

This seems to be 100% repeatable. I’ve attached the two files that I’m using to repeat this event.

Versions in use:

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
Sailwave: 2.9.7 ‘out of the box’, with no fancy add-ons or helper spreadsheets.

I note that there is a new version of Sailwave (2.16.7) recently released.

Thanks Greg for the detail report and the helpful attached files - this does make my job a lot easier.

There does appear to be problem with the import competitor from Sailwave file. It does the same in 2.16.7 - Its not something that has changed for a long time so don’t know what the cause is - would be interesting to try it on some early versions. I’ll have a look soon and get back to you. Its not a feature I personally use - I either take the whole file and exclude the ones I’m not using and then unexclude when I want them, or I import them from a csv file, but we will fix it

It’s comforting to know that you see it too! I thought for a while that I was going crazy. Although that may be the case, it’s good to know that this was not one of the symptoms.

I’ve also managed to re-create the case were an unselected competitor was added during the ‘import from sailwave file’ action.

In setting up the Summer series, I started from the Spring series (file attached). Then, I performed the following steps in sequence:

  1. Open the Spring series file and sort on ‘Boat’.
  2. Delete competitors:

No Pressure
Sayonara 1
Simple Pleasures
Sixpence
Stowaway V

  1. Import competitors from Sailwave file (the one I sent)
    Evenflow
    Tabula Rasa

At this point, Tabula Rasa is added, Evenflow is not and another competitor (Balance) is added.

  1. Delete ‘Balance’
  2. Import from Sailwave “Evenflow”
  3. Save file and re-open

Evenflow is added, Tornado has disappeared.

I hope this helps in tracking down the root cause.

Regards.

Hi Greg and any others that fancy checking out this version 2.16.12

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/220425/SailwaveBeta/sailwave.exe

This should fix the issues of importing competitors from another Sailwave file which looks to me is that its has always been an issue if the handles of those importing are used already. Thanks Greg for the files to test it with.

I’ve also changed the selected field when you double click a result, If you are using timed results if start time or finish time are blank it will select an empty one however if they are both filled in then it previously selected the start time which being a dropdown box was easily changed accidentally with the mouse wheel so it now defaults to the Finish time. Any comments gratefully received.

I finally got a chance to download and test the update. It works great.

Thanks Jon.
