Importing competitors

I have just tried to import competitors from a Sailwave file (CR3)
into the overall series race. It seems to affect the results for
previous races in the series, so I have to resort to re-inputing
each new competitor. I expected to import just the details of the
competitors who have only taken part in CR3.

Hi Ian,

  1. Looking at the message displayed for your scoring problem you need to look at what starts are defined in race CR1 of your series.

However assuming you have access to Excel or similar the easiest way I find of managing series files without rekeying anything is:

Make sure the event is scored and then

File - Export series summary to windows clipboard
select the fields you are interested in Typically Rank, Fleet, Division, SailNo, HelmName but don’t select Race columns, Total or Nett
Now paste this into a blank Excel worksheet.
Create a column in Excel and head it RaceNo
Fill this column with the Race that this will be in the series e.g. 3
Now save this as a csv file.
Open your Series Sailwave file now and select Import results from csv file
When you do this Map the Rank to the Place.
This will not only import all the results for you but it will also create any competitors that do not already exist.

It may sound a bit complicated at first but once you have done it once it becomes quite straight forward. You do have to be careful if someone enters what is really the same competitor with different names (eg. David and Dave) or they sail under a different sailno for one event. I check this by sorting in sailwave on the sail number and on the name to see if there are any obvious duplicates.

If you would like me to go through it in more detail let me know but the basic principle is as above.

Thanks Jon,

I'll try your process, it looks good at first glance.

Regarding Sailwave I would like to understand why importing

competitors screws the results. I looked at Starts but I only have
the one for each race

By my thinking, importing competitors should only import the

competitor details into the database. We should then edit for
results, starts etc.

Hi Ian,

Starts looks OK at first glance

If you would like to share your files, I’ll gladly have a look and see if I can spot anything for you
