Importing finish times from an external file

I would like to automate import finish times for a race from an
external program. Has anyone else tackled this? I assume I'm editing
the .blw file directly unless there is an automation interface of some
sort on SailWave.

Any tips?

Cheers.

David,

You import finish times from a CSV file, see under File Menu import from CSV. You do not edit the .BLW file directly.

I will try to remember to give more detailed information later but just getting ready to go our rugby coaching.

Kind regards,

Huw

David

You edit an excel spreadsheet entering the relevant details
including: Boat, Race Number (R1), Start Time, Finish Time, and Code
(DNF), Use these headings on row 1 for mapping later).

Save the file as CSV Comma Delimited.

In Sailwave open the series, File> Import From CSV File> Race Results

Browse & select the file you saved, click next.

Sailwave shows the headings in your CSV file, click next.

Next screen shows the mapping to Sailwave fields. Any not matching to
the correct field, right click the Sailwave (right column) field and
you can then select from all the Sailwave fields.

You are then asked if Sailwave is to Create a competitor if they
don't already exist.
Click Finish to import the information.

This should have the details imported for you, I'm still learning but
I've done this successfully for all of last years 28 races in one
import and it's a very handy feature.

Does Sailwave have something in it that allows one to submit the

Terry,

Currently no. It is in the development plan but I do not know at what stage Colin is with developments beyond the functionality available in the version of Sailwave available for download from the web site.

It is something I would like as well, as I am currently working with spreadsheets to produce the information. So far I have got all the individual race results calculated through the RYA YR2 spreadsheet available from their website. Now need to merge the information into a format that can do the next stage :frowning:

Kind regards,

Huw

David,

It depends what your external program is? FYI at my club we use a program on the committee boat called PROlog which has as one of its function the facility for recording the finish time of every boat as it crosses the finish line; so long as a race officer has pressed a button that makes an electrical circuit. There are other such programs as well.

PROlog stores its data in a Microsoft Access database, from this we can export file in CSV format which can be imported into Sailwave as already described in another reply to your post.

Full automation at present is not from my understanding an option. You have to have some human intervention to assign a finish time to a boat in most commons scenarios. OK it may be technically possible to do voice recording or video analysis to produce a data stream that a race results program could make use of in real time

However, I have been involved in some discussions about having a feed from GPS tracking units mounted on boats whilst they are racing to feed Sailwave so that ‘near’ time results are available at all stages of a race.

I would be interested in you expanding your statement “I would like to automate import finish times for a race from an
external program.”

Kind regards,

Huw
