Importing results in V 1.41

The club that I race at has a computer we use on the water to record elapsed times. The end result is similar to
boat name Finish Elapsed Corrected
Boat 1 01:54:58 01:54:58 02:15:46
;; ;; ;;
Boat 10 01:29:47 01:24:47 01:17:39

We can put out these times in any format text file we choose. Can we use Sailwave to import these results, thereby negating the need to type in manually?

Thanks
Colin

Hi Colin,

I am working on improving the import facilities as we speak; they are
too restrictive an unintuitive as they stand. I have promised them
to somebody by the end of next week at the latest. When done you'll
be able to import as required. To forewarn you; you'll need commas
between the fields.

Regards,
Colin J

Hi Colin,

In your copious spare time could you devise
away to publish the override Fleet race distances in the results? The feature
works great and I currently just edit the HTML output which is no big deal. But
it would be nice if I didn’t have to. Also if you add the method for setting
the race distances to the FAQ it might cut down on some of the questions.

For the benefit of more recent users, here
is the technique Colin introduced for this back in October:

Each fleet has a field where you can
override the race distance for each race as a comma separated list. A
null or blank in the list means use the usual value from the race detail
window. Missing values - i.e. there are 10 races but you only define 3
values for the fleet are also assumed to have the usual race distance.

e.g.

1.2, 3.4, 5.6, 12.4, 9.4

1.2,5.6, , 9.4

In the latter the usual value (from the
race detail) is used for race 2 and 4.

Note that if you change the race order
these lists are not currently auto-rearranged.

Colin:

The new version is great, I did however catch one bug today while
importing .CSV files into a .blw. The user defined mapping of column
headers is one column off from what is screen on the pull down; i.e.: To
select class you need to highlight boat name in the pull down. Again
thanks for the great product and all your efforts. No question it is
the most flexible, and thereby best software available presently.

Warmest regards,

Colin,

I was trying out the import facilities that you just added and I just wanted to confirm what I think I am seeing.

1) When you import a race, you must import all of the boat information, ratings and elapsed times for all the races in a series.

2) You are NOT able to import the elapsed time for specific race, adding those results to results already existing in the file. Explicitly you can not set up a series, and then each week import another weeks results, adding a new race column, but not adding anymore lines to the file.

If 2) can be done, how is it done? I have been using menu path File > Import > Series Summary....

Correct - your 2. is next on my list to do - I wanted to do it in 1.42 but
ran out of time. It'll probably turn up some time during May - I can't be
any more precise because I can't predict how much time I'll get to allocate
to Sailwave... The issue I ran into is how to identify existing
competitors - I realised that I'd need a number of methods, e.g.
class+sailno, helm+crew, helm, etc. I may actually do it in a separate
wizard to avoid overloading the existing one and allow start/finish times
and other race information to be imported; i.e. the race number will
probably be a require field. All ideas welcome...

Interesting problem you raise.

You could allow the user to select any combination of competitor fields to be the key, these would then become required fields in the wizard. during file load. ( you could not have any of these fields blank in the CSV file, and the program could check this and refuse to load the file if any of the key fields in the file are NULL.) As you indicated there must always be a race field available in the file, otherwise, what is being loaded?

For new competitors not previously seen, the wizard could either auto add the new competitors with warning that the competitor info is added but not complete (ie. it would not have rating information ), or it could warn and give a list of competitors that were not loaded. I would be happy with either one, although the former would be a more elegant solution. It would be nice if this was recoverable in a file, sort of a import errors file.

The advantages here are 2 fold.
1) The user can import based on any competitor fields depending on their situation.

2) While the flexibility is more complex then a single wizard would be, it should be easier for you then writing 4 or 5 different wizards as it is simply less code in the long run. (less maintenance too 8)!!! )

Hope this helps.

I would just like to add my 2 cents worth about how impressed I am with your program. A fantastic piece of software.

Colin

Thanks Colin, I like the arbitrary field specification but will probably do
it in a separate wiz and live with the maintenance...

key fields in the file are NULL.) As you indicated there must always be a
race field available in the file, otherwise, what is being loaded?

For new competitors not previously seen, the wizard could either auto add
the new competitors with warning that the competitor info is added but not
complete (ie. it would not have rating information ), or it could warn and
give a list of competitors that were not loaded. I would be happy with
either one, although the former would be a more elegant solution. It
would be nice if this was recoverable in a file, sort of a import errors
file.

The advantages here are 2 fold.
1) The user can import based on any competitor fields depending on their
situation.

2) While the flexibility is more complex then a single wizard would
be, it should be easier for you then writing 4 or 5 different wizards as
it is simply less code in the long run. (less maintenance too 8)!!! )

Hope this helps.

I would just like to add my 2 cents worth about how impressed I am with
your program. A fantastic piece of software.

Colin

Colin,

I was trying out the import facilities that you just added and I just
wanted to confirm what I think I am seeing.

1) When you import a race, you must import all of the boat information,
ratings and elapsed times for all the races in a series.

2) You are NOT able to import the elapsed time for specific race, adding
those results to results already existing in the file. Explicitly you can
not set up a series, and then each week import another weeks results,
adding a new race column, but not adding anymore lines to the file.

If 2) can be done, how is it done? I have been using menu path File >
Import > Series Summary....
