Importing via CSV

Hi

I’m having issues importing via CSV in the club environment as its almost too complicated and prone to error for anyone without tons of time spent on Sailwave

The first issue is mapping, I can only setup the CSV so well before Sailwave wont recognise the column name automatically and you have to map it manually (or it just gets it wrong in the first place, even worse for the people who have little experience.) The CSV isn’t likely to change so can’t the mapping save to previously assigned cells?

The other problem is importing also overwrites data without any checks. For example if I wanted to import race 2 times and laps but accidentally put race 1 in the race no. column, the results for race 1 would be overwritten. when you’re doing 30 race series and you do this it becomes difficult to find and rectify the effected race.

Kind Regards

Matt

Hi Matt,

You don’t say what version of Sailwave you are using.

If you are using a version less than 2.25.11 please install this from the Sailwave Website

Once you have 2.25.11 please upgrade it to 2.27.0 by downloading the following Sailwave.exe

https://www.dropbox.com/s/20vqgcw8xpn4toz/sailwave.exe?dl=1

Then overwrite the existing Sailwave.exe in the C:\program files(x86)\Sailwave\Sailwave.exe with the one you just downloaded.

This has quite a lot of updates to the CSV import and additionally has checks to prompt you when importing.

If you could give this version a go and let me know if you still have any issues

Hi Jon

Thanks that latest version sorts the overwriting.

An option in the user interface or similar to auto set to ignore on remaining unmapped fields would also sort the issue with un-experienced members having to understand the mapping process. I appreciate there is already a button there for it but it doesn’t stop me getting asked what to do next each week

Hi Jon,

I will test v2-27-0 more fully under Windows 10 and Linux but can

say that both work initially after very quick test.

The very quick Linux test was my openSUSE Tumbleweed which is

fully patched and running WINE v4.1. I found previously when
testing v2-26-2 of Sailwave it will not work under WINEv1.6, but
do not know at what version of WINE between v1.6 and v4.0 it might
start running.

Will check out what versions of WINE my Linux Mint and Ubuntu

systems are running tomorrow.

What are changes from v2-26-2, please?

Kind regards,

Huw

Hi Matt - Could you DM me a sample of the CSV you are importing.

2.27.0 is built with Clarion 11 and is touch enabled and also has the DN Iceboat tie-breaking ( Although this is not quite correct as yet )

Hi,Linux & MacOS SUG members,

Linux

Done a quick test of Sailwave v2-27-0 and it works for the

minimal things tried so far, on my

  • Ubuntu 18.04 LTS VM [Virtual Machine] running WINE 3.0

  • openSUSE Tumbleweed desktop running WINE 4.1
Sailwave v2-26-0 and newer will run on Linux systems with at
    least WINE v3.0 and newer.

Sailwave v2-26-0 and newer will not run on systems using WINE

1.6.x.

MacOS

Having looked at the WINEBottler site for WINE on MacOS it is

still a long way behind indicating that WINE1.8.6 is the stable
version, with WINE2.0 as development version. This means, in my
opinion, for Sailwave users running on MacOS systems using
WINEBottler that the latest version of Sailwave they can use is
v2-25-11. I am more than happy to be corrected by someone with
access to a MacOS system.

After a quick Internet search, there are other ways to get WINE

on a MacOS system which Mac users may like to look at:

  • Homebrew - which appears to use the latest releases of WINE

and make it easy to keep WINE up to date. See
    for the
    information to install HomeBrew.
  • WINEHQ - follow the instructions to install WINE at the WINEHQ

web site [] and again can make the
    latest version of WINE available.
Look forward to feedback/comments from MacOS users who have used,
or might be able to test, these alternatives.

Kind regards,

Huw

Hi Matt,

Not sure if you’ve noticed but import now supports a race no of + add new race.

This works well for me as no longer need to know what race in the series it is when scoring

See Jon’s updated notes https://www.sailwave.com/how-do-i-import-a-list-of-race-results

I agree it would be nice if there was possible to not have to click, Ignore, maybe not mapped could be handled same way as Ignore.

Cheers

Huw,

Response ref V2.27.0 on Mac OSX

I use Mac and am on OSX 10.14.3 Mojave, the latest version of OSX

I use two virtual machine environments

  1. Full version of Parallels 14.1.2

  2. Crossover ver 18.1

Updated to 2.27.0 using Jon’s instructions and it appears to be fine on both environments, now i have not done any extensive testing, our clubs season does not start until May, but what i have looked at appears to be fine.

There is a slight issue with Crossover in that the Menu bar is displayed with certain items “grey’d out” but those items are still active and appear to work as normal, so probably just a display issue.

thanks

Hi John,

Thank you for the information it is very useful addition to the

general pool of information.

For others who might not be aware :

  • Crossover is a commercialised version of WINE by Codeweaver,

who support the development of WINE and in fact put all their
enhancements back into the WINE program.
  • Parallels a commercial product providing a virtual Microsoft

Windows environment that requires a valid Microsoft Windows
    licence as well.
Anyone else using a Mac got any feedback.

Huw,

I have been running Sailwave on macs for years through Wineskin which ‘wraps’ the application so it looks and behaves like a normal apple application (I’m on the latest Mojave OS 10.14.3).

You have to put a bit of effort into setting it up, but it is free and if you don’t like it then you don’t donate.

FYI
I am running Sailwave 2.27.0 under wine-4.0-rc7 (which IIRC is also called “Wine Devel” downloaded from the WineHQ website) on my mid-2011 MacBook air laptop. Sailwave 2.27.0 runs fine so far… no problems seen

Hi Mastt,

Thank you for adding to the pool of information. Quick question -

how easy did you find it to configure/set-up?

I also just noticed that WINE 4.0 is now stable and no longer an

RC and that 4.2 is the development version which I expect to
appear as an update for my opneSUSE Tumbleweed rolling
distribution soon.

Kind regards,

Hello Huw,

I would not classify Wine as easy, but if you use an install package at the link below, it should be relatively straightforward.

https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/macosx/download.html

I just installed version 4.2, based on your note. It seems to work fine, so far with sailwave.

After I installed version 4.2, there was nothing for me to do on the sailwave 2.27.0 side, as that was already set up. But if you also need to install and set up sailwave, there are a few tricks to finding where all the various sailwave template, script, etc. files are located. Post a question if you need a specific issue addressed.

I think cleaning out all the old Wine versions is often recommended before installing a new Wine version. That might be a chore; it was for me as I had many older versions installed in various locations on the disk, as well as some versions installed with macports, some with homebrew, (I know - you are not supposed to use both macports and homebrew on the same computer) and other installs from the who knows where. I think I got all of them uninstalled, or mostly uninstalled and everything seems to be running fine so far.

  • Matt

Hi Matt,

Thank you for the feedback it is most helpful addition to t he

pool of information.

  FYI - I do not have a Mac system in my pool of different systems;

only occasionally getting access when at an event where someone
asks if I can help install Sailwave on their Mac system.

I pulled together various bits of information I found on this

SUG, other resources & what I knew from my Linux systems, and
put together a set of install instructions a couple of years ago
that seemed to work using WINEBottler. However, these instructions
now need updating especially as WINEBottler is based on WINE 2.0
if one uses the development version and WINE 1.8 if one uses the
stable version. Sailwave 2-26-0 and newer needs at least WINE 3.0+
based on the testing I have done.

Yes I agree finding where the template, scripts etc are located

in Linux & Mac using the standard install. I have these
folders in cloud storage [Dropbox in my case], then I can have
the same Sailwave environment across all the systems I run
Sailwave on. The paths to these folders have to be set-up on each
system running Sailwave, but it is a easy to do.

Look forward to any other hints and tips you might have for

Sailwave users who run Sailwave on MacOS systems.

In case you have not found out yet, there is one part of Sailwave

that does not run on MacOS & Linux systems, this is the
progressive rating system [RYA NHC] that uses external mode as
this relies on using Excel and Microsoft message passing
protocols. On Microsoft Windows system this functionality allows
competent users of Excel to modify the calculation algorithms to
their own requirements.

Kind regards,

Huw

I used wine bottler and your instructions initially, I believe. I subsequently stumbled through some updates of Wine and of sailwave, breaking the system several times because I did not really know what I was doing, but it always worked out eventually. I think I understand enough of these two programs now to not break the race scoring capability for too long.

Yes, using WINE, I do miss having the MS Excel interface. But, I am too frugal to buy the Parallels program to enable running Windows on the Mac. I am scoring only one-design races, but I have been playing around with a couple pseudo-handicapping schemes for our one-design racing that gives the back-of-the-fleet racers a better appreciation of their progress. For these handicap calculations, it would be nice to have a direct interface to Excel, but without it, the CSV export is adequate to get the race results into Excel for post-processing. Maybe in some of their spare time, Sailwave, LTD can add some Excel-like capabilities within the program.

It just occurred to me that there is a companion utility package called winetricks that looks like it might provide the Microsoft .net framework needed for the com interface to Excel. I played around with it a couple years ago, but did not get anywhere, probably because I really did not know what I was working with. I think winetricks is for both LINUX and MacOS operating systems, so you might have more success than me with it.
