I’ve installed Sailwave using WineBottler on my MacBook Pro, but it crashes when I try to save the results of the regatta I input (a default with all of the boats but no races run). I got a strange message in the console says:

Hi Tom,
I don't personally have a mac but my son visited yesterday with his new Mac-book Air, and I got him to install Winebottler and Sailwave on it. It all went very smoothly and Sailwave appeared to run fine at least all the basic functions. We did use the Winebottler 1.6-rc5 version but we could certainly create and score and save a Sailwave series.
I also know that some of the Team15 co-ordinators use it successfully on a Mac.
Which version of Winebottler did you try?

Jon,
I used Winebottler 1.4.1.6.
There was some question in my mind as to the exact nature of certain steps, because the instructions I was following said that the icon for sailwave should be a box at one point and I didn’t have a box icon for it. I was also uncertain whether to install as an app or to run within wine.
Can you point me to the correct instructions for installation?

Hi Tom,
As I said I don’t have a Mac neither am I a Mac expert. When my son visited yesterday I got him to install Sailwave on it using Winebottler. We did a screen capture while he did it and so you can see what he did.
There may be better ways of doing it as he is not a computer expert but it did run.

Jon,
I followed the video you sent and it helped as some of the steps were not clear to me. I may still have done something wrong, as it seems to want to remove the app when I try to run it. But I’ll try a fresh install later today and see if that helps. The “Install” that created the app hung up several times before completing, and I’m not at all sure it worked correctly when it did finally complete, so that may be my problem. For now I’m writing it off as having too many apps open when I did the install (20+).

Hi Tom,
When you say the install hung. At what point did it hang. The part of the install where it said searching for previous installations took longer on the Mac than it normally does on a Windows machine, and I did shorten that section in the Video rather than have it look like the video had stopped.

This last bit is interesting reading. Over two years ago I tried to install wine bottle on my Mac to run Sailwave and I could never get it to work. So finally, as the sailing season was almost on me I bought Parallels Desktop. It took many hours with the Parallels people to finally get Sailwave to work and I’ve been Ok ever since. None of these programs seem to be intuitive enough for self installation unless, of course your smarter than me, which is not hard when it comes to computers. Perhaps, some day, Apple will let the gate open and we can have a Mac app for Sailwave. Any suggestions how to do that?

The way to do this is to program using something that can be compiled
(or run, in the case of Java) under multiple operating systems. Most all
open source projects tend to do that. Unfortunately, Sailwave was
started by Colin using a proprietary language and Jon (probably the more
active of the two maintainers) has previously indicated that to switch
to something else at this point would be too much work.
So, for now, I think we are going to need some type of virtual machine
to run Sailwave outside of Windows.
Art
PS - There are open source projects that run on a MAC so I don't think
this is an Apple issue but I could be wrong. I know you can compile QT
projects for Windows, Linux or MAC OS X so I'm pretty sure this would be
possible, although it would require a complete rewrite.

None of these programs seem to be intuitive enough for self installation unless, of course your smarter than me, which is not hard when it comes to computers. Perhaps, some day, Apple will let the gate open and we can have a Mac app for Sailwave. Any suggestions how to do that?

Hi Art,
In addition to of course Windows
Sailwavedoes run fine at least all the majority of functions run fine on both Mac and on Linux using Wine.
WineBottler is OSX app that packages Wine and Winetricks for the Mac. My son who is not a computer expert, managed to install Sailwave on his Macbook Air in 10 minutes and the only things I think I told him was where to find Winebottler and Sailwave and to set the start-up program to be Sailwave.exe
I know of several people that use Sailwave on a Mac - so it should not be an issue. If it is a problem then I’m prepared to look into it. Wine is a program that translates the Windows API to that of the host without requiring windows. You can of course always install Windows on your Apple hardware as a dual boot or you can run it with Parallels. These latter two options require you to purchase a windows license whereas Winebottler does not. And from watching my son install it - it should be fairly easy for most people - especially with the help of the video.

Jon,
Of course. Sailwave can run in any number of "virtual machines." The OP
was asking about running natively, which is what I was answering. For
testing and setting up at home, my scorer uses Sailwave under MAC using
Parallels and except for the fact that any "virtual machine" will run
slowly there were no problems installing and running Sailwave (she tells
me Parallels itself is another thing!).
As programmers I think we would all agree that running natively is
better but at this point that isn't a practical option for Sailwave
except under Windows. If one were starting from scratch at this point in
the brave new world of Windows, Linux, MAC, Android, etc. I'm sure most
programmers would consider an option that could be compiled to generate
native code (or could be run natively in a standard VM like Java) under
multiple operating systems. I've fooled around a little with both QT and
Java and they would be options to consider if starting from a clean
sheet of paper today.

Hi Art,
Just to clarify Wine is not a Virtual Machine solution - Taken from the Wine website
***Instead of simulating internal Windows logic like a virtual machine or emulator, Wine translates Windows API calls into POSIX calls on-the-fly, eliminating the performance and memory penalties of other methods and allowing you to cleanly integrate Windows applications into your desktop. ***
So to some extent it is really running Natively in a performance perspective which is the big plus for the Wine solution. If you run Sailwave on a Mac or Linux machine using Wine it should run at the same speed as if it were a Windows machine.
IMO there is currently no obvious solution for running applications cross platform, all the solutions have their advantages and disadvantages. If you wrote it in Java then you still need to install a Java Virtual Machine on each platform, so not really any difference than installing Wine other than Windows gets a bonus of not requiring it. Translating it from Clarion would be a massive job so its all a bit hypothetical.
I would just like to make sure it easy for the non-programmers to run it on the Mac. From what Anders says it is using WinOnX and from my sons experience using Winebottler it is. For the Calibre of people that we are trusting with the results then neither of these solutions should pose a problem.

Ah, so Wine is like Java in that it sits in between your application and
the actual operating system and translates all the calls to whatever is
appropriate. That's what I thought.
Java is referred to by Oracle as a "virtual machine" although it
certainly isn't that. By the same logic, Wine would also be "VM-like"
although it clearly isn't a true VM. Parallels is a true VM in that you
have to actually buy and install Windows to be able to run Windows
programs (or so my scorer tells me). Java programs are definitely slower
than programs written in C++, for example, but I don't know enough to
know whether that is a function of the Java language or the fact that
all the calls need to be interpreted before they can be passed on. Its
probably some of each. I would imagine there has to be at least some
performance hit with Wine but, as with Java, most software programs make
such limited demands on the hardware that you would never notice it. The
obvious exception tends to be media-related software, such as video
playing or editing software. Sailwave is so light on resources that I
cannot notice any difference in speed between a VERY old Pentium machine
and the latest and fastest machines. That makes it very versatile.

Just a shout out of thanks to Jon Eskdale for this help. The video was wonderful when I noticed all the details. Like getting the latest version of WineBottler instead of the latest stable version. Not it runs great and I could have had it with me today for the regatta!

Can you point me to the correct instructions for installation?

We did use the Winebottler 1.6-rc5 version but we could certainly create and score and save a Sailwave series.
I also know that some of the Team15 co-ordinators use it successfully on a Mac.
Which version of Winebottler did you try?
