Laps

I have to score an International Moth skiff regatta. In the worlds
sailing instructions is written:
" 4.1 For races where the course is shortened or where all boats do
not complete the same number of laps the following will apply in
determining the finishing order;
(a) Boats completing the same number of laps as the first finishing
boat will be scored in the order that they cross the Finish Line.
e.g. 1,2,3,4,5,…..
(b) Boats completing 1 lap less than the first boat will awarded a
finishing place equal to the next available place after all boats
complying with (a) above have been scored, and in the order they last
crossed the finish line. e.g. 6,7,8,9,10,11…….
(c) Boats completing 2 laps less than the first boat will awarded a
finishing place equal to the next available place after all boats
complying with (a) and (b) above have been scored, and in the order
they last crossed the finish line. e.g. 12,13,14,15,…….
(d) The above method of scoring will apply regardless of whether or
not the first finishing boat is subjected to any scoring penalties
(eg. OCS, ZFP, SCP, RAF, DSQ, DNE)."
Any suggestion to use Sailwave to input the finishing order and the
laps number, in order to obtain the finishing position?
Thanks, Roberto Armellin

Hi Roberto,

I can't think of a way that the laps field is going to help you; well not a
nice solution anyway. I think the best approach is to ask the RO to clearly
show 3 groups of boats, either by 3 sets of sail numbers or by adding -1
or -2 (say), if appropriate, next to each sail number. Then when entering
the sail numbers into the sailno wiz, do the boats that did the max laps
first, then the -1 boats, then the -2s; Sailwave will increment places
correctly. Make sure your start record (in Edit+Race) is set to record
Places.

Somebody else may come up with a nattier solution...

Good luck,

Colin

Assuming that the results are scored as a one-design then it should be a
simple mater of putting the results in the order they finish. All the boats
that completed the full course, followed by the boats that completed one
less lap, then the boats that completed two less laps, etc. So if your
rotation sheet shows the following finish order

1092 (3 laps)

1193 (2 laps)

1242 (2 laps)

1292 (2 laps)

1213 (3 laps)

1231 (3 laps)

1181 (2 laps)

1471 (3 laps)

In the sail wizard enter all the boats that completed three laps 1092, 1213,
1231, and 1471 followed by the boats that completed two' laps 1193, 1242,
1292, and 1181.

I am curious as to why rule (d) exists and why only the first finishing
boat.

"The above method of scoring will apply regardless of whether or not the
first finishing boat is subjected to any scoring penalties (eg. OCS, ZFP,
SCP, RAF, DSQ, DNE)."

I have used Colin's solution on a number of occasions.
It is all about the finishing list(s) which you give to the scorer.

The problem comes when a 2 lap boat crosses the line in between two 3 lap boats etc etc

If this is an issue, why not approach the regatta as though it was a General Handicap?
All boats will obviously have the same PY
Enter 'finishing' times where the next boat is 1 second more than the previous & the laps completed.

This should (I think) give you finishing places based upon average lap times & the desired result
You may need to play with the times you enter.

Regards
Ralph

Hi Mark!
You did identify and explain exactly my need.
In my opinion this SI is very useful for skiff class races to avoid too much
DNF scored boats because their frequent capsizing and time loose (The Race
Officer who likes to apply such a rule has to remember to put in writing
something about that the rule 28.1 is changed).
The rule (d) exist because of RRS 89.3(a), just to fix a time limit.
