Can anyone advise me on how to set up SailWave for scoring a Laser Masters regatta which is to be held at our club at the end of April? I see that Alamitos Bay YC scored the same type event at the end of August. It looks like the main question is how to keep the final race which holds the handicaps from being discarded. We will be sailing eight races with the ninth holding the handicap. Thank You.
There is a description of how to score a ILCA North American Master Handicap Event in the Sailwave ABYC USer Guide on the ABYC website, which I have also included below. http://www.abyc.org/upload/Sailwave_ABYC_User_Guide.pdf
ILCA North American Master Handicap System
The International Laser Class Association (ILCA) Master’s are broken into four age divisions: Apprentice (35-44 years old), Master (45-54 years old), Grand Master (55-64 years old) and Great Grand Master (65+). In North America the Masters typically race as one fleet but score in their age divisions. An overall winner is also determined using the ILCA North American Master Handicap System where Apprentices add 3 points to their finish position in each race, Masters 2 points and Grand Masters 1 point. The results are recalculated and the person with the lowest score wins, etc.
Having setup the event as you would normally take the following actions to setup the handicap. Add four new Scoring Codes as follows:
· APP (Apprentice)
· MST (Master)
· GM (Grand Master)
· GGM (Great Grand Master).
These codes will be used to apply the handicap to each competitor. Each scoring code should be “Scored a fixed number of Points” per race, APP 3 points, MST 2 points, GM 1 points, and GGM 0 points. These codes will need to be modified after each race to reflect the series handicap, race handicap multiplied by the number of races that count in a boats series total. An Apprentice who has sailed six races and has one discard would have a handicap of 15 points (3 points x 5 races).
Add an extra race and change the race name to “Handicap” or “H’cap”. This race will be used to hold each boat’s series handicap. Edit the start of the “Handicap” race, Edit+Edit Start. In the Edit Race window check “This race is not discardable”.

Hi: A sacrilegious response but why not use ZW which is designed for
scoring Laser regattas of this type. When we scored the Worlds we
were ‘forced’ to use ZW and while we never liked it much it did some
things that SW could never do.

The ILCA North American Masters Handicapping system is not used at the Laser Worlds and I don’t believe that ZW will support the ILCA-NA scoring system.

Thank you very much. I will try to reproduce the scoring for the ABYC Laser Masters event this past August. I will need to see how cumbersome it is to adjust the handicap as the races proceed. I may end up doing it at the end of the four races (1 discard) for the first day and then a final (2 discards) at the end of the event on Sunday afternoon. 1/2 of the handicap for the first day, in other words. Thanks again. I hope you don't mind if I contact you again if I stumble. Selby W.

We didn’t have any problems, other than in our in the rush to post results we almost forgot that the handicap is based on the number of races to count not the number of races sailed.
We only posted results at the end of each day of racing, so only adjusted the handicap at the end of each day of racing.
The only other potential challenge is if the Full Rigs sail a different number of races than the Radials. You would then need to create a second set of scoring codes for the Radials handicap as they would have sailed a different number of races and therefore have a different hamdicap. You could use “APP” for Full Rig and “APP.” for Radials.

Rather than go back and edit each handicap for the number of races sailed, Leave the handicaps alone and simply use race weighting to multiply the handicap X the number of races. In the example above, you would simply give the race a weight of 5. This makes it a little easier when posting daily results over several days.
