I am going back to Clarion 6 and version 2.02
b6. I’lll try and redo all tweaks since then. it’s going to be
very painful but I think Linux/Mac compat is essential these days.
Am still working on Platform independent version using Javascript
but want existing Sailwave to work too.

Thanks for that, Colin, but I have some bad news: the newer versions of Ubuntu (11.10) and Linux Mint (12) seem to break Sailwave. Working great up to then.
I agree that the compatibility is very important - I'm working with the folks on the WINE forum to try to understand the issue better.
I'll be sure to pass on any fixes (via PM is you like, so as not to clog up the forum).
In other news... a good friend and Windows programmer has been working on a course calculator for race committees. There is already a commercially available Excel add-in called ezTrap, but he thought it would be fun to try it in Windows directly. It looks pretty cool - estimating speed of boats around the course using polars for each class, plotting lat-lon for all marks, then showing all that on a Google map. It also (as of yesterday), will revise course time estimates based on real-time performance of the boats on the course that day.
It's still very much in alpha stages now, but we are having a two-day club race this weekend and we are going to try it out, using some GPS data loggers on a couple of the boats. Should be fun.
oooh - this sounds interesting... we have big push going on for next season to try and get the course lengths set right so that we can get 4 races in on a Sunday instead of 3.
Is it compatible with linux (asking as it was brought up following that discussion)? Is it dinghies or big stuff?

On my desktop, running Ubuntu 11.10 and SW 2.03b6, I can open an
existing file under Wine 1.3.28, but can’t open a new file. (so I
just delete all data from an old file) On my laptop, same config, SW
works fine!

That sounds like privs on a temp file maybe?
2.03b6 works? - if you edit a competitor -
notes tab - select text area and type - does it crash?

Funny about the Linux compatibility thing - he is writing it in .NET, and I've been trying to point him to the Mono project, which is a .NET compatibility layer for Linux.
We used it today in three dinghy races. It worked great (but he ran it because he knew where his bugs are). We could set up the courses, then set wind direction and it would tell us lat-long of all marks and predicted course time. The goal is bearing-distance from the committee boat, which is the next iteration of the program.
We also tested its ability to recalculate course completion times based on real-time mark roundings. More often than not he was within a couple of minutes.
It's designed for big boats or small. He has a pretty neat little polar gadget that allows you to put in characteristics of the boats on various points of sail, and it will extrapolate and figure out the expected VMG for that boat over the course.
Still very, very early days, but we are having fun with it! I'll keep you guys updated. He took off early to continue to work on the program, so it'll be interesting to see what it looks like tomorrow.

Please do. My ideal would be something that you punch in the wind speed and direction and it tells yo which of our fixed marks to use and how many laps... ...looked like that spreadsheet couldn't do it because yo needed to know boat speed... Sounds like your man can do boat speed but presmably hes placing marks.

Thanks Andy. When I’ve get this build done
I’ll publish it as 2.4.1 and we can iterate getting it working
with Linux/Mac. I’m keen to put more effort into this and for
other people to get involved. The Sailwave website itself will
soon just be a Wordpress blog and there is the option for more
authors. The help file will just be blog posts too. The reason
I’m doing this is to that I can update stuff as it comes to mind
or as I have a few minutes spare. As it stands it’s a major
effort to add something. Scope for grabbing all relevant posts
and caching for offline Sailwave installs. I’ve drifted awat from
the focus of Sailwave itself and need to get back to it. Given up
hope of making money - back to basics.
