Locales

re: locales

I forgot to say that the reason I asked is because I want to simplify
things. I am guilty of over complicating at times. In essence I want to
offer a *binary* version of Sailwave for various foreign languages - no
messing with translation files etc at the user end; all that would be done
this end and then the system compiled for each language - in this way much
more of the UI would be covered by the translation and it would all be less
clunky and error prone (and faster too). I would still need volunteers to
actually do a translation.

I have been using it, but it takes a long time to translate… Well, if you do as described here you will have x versions of sailwave; one for each language. Wich one will you upgrade first ? And if you release a patch (specially for me), will it work on every language ?

I’ve been doing some achestor tracing, and there is a shareware program called Brothers Keeper. They have the same problem… There it is a laguage file with the translated text, I think the same way as you are doing it now… There is a website, and I think John Steed hav some experience with translating problems…

Hi Martin,

Maintenance would not be a problem - I’d run a script over the source which would do the translation and then compile it. Source changes would only be done in one place. We get the best of both worlds then - but it still needs some sort of translation file this end. At the end of the day there is no getting away from actually doing the translation. Locales is another thing that hasn’t really taken off and I’m in a get-rid-of-the-dead-wood mode at the moment… I’d like to remove it as it stands and replace it later as above.

Wiegates’

Regards,

Colin
