Long distance racing

Not a Sailwave message.

Long distance catamaran (F18s, Darts, Inters etc) racing is getting popular
in the UK and our club has a perfect stretch of water for one. However we
are, as a club, reluctant to simply jump on the bandwagon and host a race
because of possible comebacks if somebody is seriously injured etc.

The question is, are we being over-cautious? On the face of it RRS2001-2004
Rule 4 seems to exonerate the host club and race officers from any possible
comeback and coupled with a suitable disclaimer would seem to be safe
enough...? We could also put an age limit on a race if required.

Does anybody know the bottom line on this? We have all the necessary club
insurance.

Regards,
Colin J

have you seen the RYA Guide to Risk Assessment, in paper form from
Eastleigh, or can be found on their website. www.rya.org.uk
As all Harbour Authorities now have a Port Marine Safety Code, they insist
on the Risk Assessment, this is also good protection should an incident
occur. A lot of extra hassle, but seems essential the way everybody
litigates these days. Have just completed it all for Bursledon Regatta this
weekend on the River Hamble, despite the fact we have never drowned anyone
in 133 years.
I attach the disclaimer we use as part of the Risk Assessment.
Of course will be using Sailwave.

John

Thanks John, I'll pass the information on to the appropriate persons.
