looking for sailwave echo scoring guidance ;-)

Colin, I've been struggling with use of Sailwave in Echo mode. I
thought the program would automatically compute new ratings based on
previously sailed races. Best I can tell Sailwave does not do
this. Can you please confirm? I've been re-reading the Echo rules
and guides at the ISA site and found Appendix 1 of the Management
Guidelines has formulas and instructions I thought were embedded in
the Sailwave logic. Another thought I had was maybe I need a
ratings file as I'm not using that capability. Also, the Sailwave

Rating Estimator... when using Echo mode it would tend

to suggest a new Echo rating as indicated in the tag for the data.
Is it perhaps using the Echo Appendix 1 logic to calculate a new
rating? I have four races scored and its suggesting some major
swings in ratings (much to my own dismay too). Please provide some
guidance on the classic use of Sailwave in the Echo realm. Much
appreciated and nice work on this program. As a fellow coder I must
say you've done a spectacular job! regards, Mark PYC Race

PS. This is our first series using Sailwave. I hope to make a
contribution to your cause on behalf of PYC should we adopt this
long term. We previously used QuickScore.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your question and your comments.

You're right; Sailwave does not perform any personal handicap calculations.
It's in the development plan, but we're not there yet. When you select Echo
as a rating system, it's just telling Sailwave to use a specific corrected
time formula; nothing else. The (primitive) rating estimater, is a
generalised version of the way that the RYA recommend that rating are
changed; see their YR2 handbook; essentially you take a large percentage of
the corrected times, +/- 17.5% I think, then generate a average corrected
time from them, then back calculate the rating for the race.

Sailwave does however allow you to manually set a rating value per race; but
that implies manual labor...

Regards,
Colin J
