I’m new to sailwave and have just scored my first series of dinghy racing using PY.
The club award one trophy a year using personal handicaps. They use the RYA NHC calculation from sailwave. The start handicap for each sailor in the new series is the final NHC baseline from last year’s final series.
I have set a new sailwave file up using DHC instead of PY, all good.

Right, I like the ‘achieved handicap’ idea that seems to underpin the DHC system, where a sailors performance is assessed against the average of the whole fleet. I think thats better than BCR (where the winner is the comparitor).
However, I don’t like how ‘dynamic’ the DHC is. In a series of 12 races, most sailors sail about six. I’d have thought it would make more sense sticking with one fixed handicap for that series. That way the sailor could see when they sailed better and when worse than their baseline handicap. Making the baseline shift constantly makes the system difficult to understand and communicate. No sailor knows what their handicap actually is. Can you imagine a golfer not knowing what their handicap is (and what their friends handicaps are!)?
Can i set sailwave up to use fixed personal handicaps, not dynamic? and yet spit out Ha as well as BCR?
My reason for wanting Ha for each sailor is so they can compare their performance with their standard after each race. This is currently lacking in our system and I think we lose out on a really interesting metric. Sailors with a growth mindset want a way to measure their improvement that is divorced from the performance of others. It would also be fun for each sailors handicaps to be publicised and open for discussion, just like in golf. There would also be talk of ‘bandits’ and such like.
I may have to set up a spreedsheet to do this if I cant get it in Sailwave.

Firstly welcome to the Sailwave User Group forum.
Sailwave only has RYA NHC and Irish Sailing ECHO progressive rating systems built in.
Question - is DHC meant to be NHC? Or do you mean something else.
Sailwave can also make use of external Excel spreadsheet to do custom calculations. I think to do what you are looking at this would be the way you have to do it.
It is possible in Sailwave to score under several different rating systems or just first over the line concurrently by the use of ‘Aliases’. When using this functionality you only have to enter finish sheet data once for each competitor.
With a little bit of guidance from Jon and a starter Excel template I configured a spreadsheet to score using World Sailing Empirical Handicap Scheme for a South African Sailwave user.
When using progressive rating systems Sailwave can through the use of an ‘Effect’ show in the series summary table the handicap/rating used in each race for each competitor.
When using a progressive rating system after the calculations Sailwave puts in a field ‘New Rating’ the rating to be used for the next race.
It might be possible, but would have to have Jon’s input, to put in to the BCE & BCR fields data feed back from an external spreadsheet.
Back before the RYA made PY Online website for submission of data from PY races, the RYA made a spreadsheet available for calculating the achieved performance by each competitor in a race. It might be possible to adapt the spreadsheet so it can receive data from Sailwave and then post data back into Sailwave. The RYA spreadsheet uses the top performing two thirds of competitors in a race to calculate the perceived performance; they considered the bottom third to be poor performers. I did create a modified version back then to ignore the top 10% and bottom 20% in the race. We had a range of competitors from World Champions to beginners, so I felt it appropriate to exclude high performers as well as poor performers. But the percentage of top & bottom could easily be changed in the spreadsheet. I might still have copies of the spreadsheets in my archives.
