medal race

hi,

in the medal race, people who are not entitled to join in should be scored for the finishing place one more than the 10 person multiplied by 2, that is ( 10+1) * 2 . however, the sailwave system caculated as the total number of the boats multiply two. that is a big difference. how can i edit this scoring method ? can you heip me ? thank you !

Hi Rory

At the last ISAF International Race Officers Conference, IROs were informed that the value should be based upon the whole gold fleet, not just the 10 competitors.

The Powerpoint slide regarding Medal races included:

"Double points and letter scores, also double points based on original fleet size!!!"

This seemed to resolve the debate until I recently saw draft SIs for a major International event which state

“that letter scores will be based on total boats in the final ie 22 points.”

These draft SIs were produced by ISAF after the conference !?!?!

Colin set up the medals race scoring system to meet the directive from the IRO conference.

Not sure how simple it would be to provide both options in SW

Ralph

Hi Rory

Your email suggests that you are looking at scoring an ISAF grade 1or2 event.

Looking at your email address, are you involved with getting things set up for Qingdao in August???

I might be able to help if you are likely to have any Qualification & Finals series and/or how to overcome the medals race problems

To score the boats that failed to qualify for the final race, set up a new scoring code to show that the boat failed to qualify for the final. e.g. DNQ

Then make the points for DNQ = 11.

I am sure we can solve any problems you have.

Early ideas on how you want to score the Medal races and the points for those not racing would help (outside the top 10).

Hi Rory

I have just received a draft copy of the SIs for your event

As far as I can see, the ‘special’ requirements other than a normal series are:

19.1 In the Series Scoring tab tick apply App A8.1 & A8.2

DO NOT tick the B8.8 option

19.3(a) In the Finals & Medal Races tab tick last race is a medal race and Auto Label…

DO NOT tick anything in the Big Event tab

19.3(b) You will need to set up special letter codes for the medal race.

Create a new code of MDNF (which means DNF in the Medal Race) and set the points as 11.

Any other ‘M’ letter score needed, can be linked to this code.

19.6 If this is needed, I suggest that you create a code of MDNT (Medal Did Not Try??)

This code can be linked to set the code by hand.

If this code is ever needed, it would need manual input to set the points so that the boat’s total net score puts it in 10th place in the regatta overall.

For the benefit of interested SUG members, ISAF have developed a new Instruction which requires boats to make a genuine effort in the Medal race.

The penalty for a breach of this instruction is automatic 10th place in the regatta.

I cannot see anything else which is ‘special’ but please do not hesitate to contact SUG if you have any other queries, after Jerome’s visit

Regards

Ralph

Hi Colin

DNF would be the number in the original fleet plus 1

The medal race option would then take this number & double it.

This is why the special code value for Quingdao is set at 11 and not 22

For your & other interested SUG members information, I have got to the bottom of what is the value of the letter scores in the medal race.

The documented decision has been original fleet size.

ISAF are still developing possible improvements to the medal race scoring & it seems that at Quingdao, they are trying a different definition of the letter score value

Hi, all!

This discussion is a little hard to follow, since I’ve not seen the SI (draft) yet.

Is there not going to be flight racing in the qual series? If there is, why should you not tick anything in the Big Event tab?

(Sorry, but this is probably just regarding the Gold fleet… Wich means that you have to first make one file for all the qual-series, then for each fleet (i.e. gold, silver, bronze))

You’re mentioning some “special effort” in the medal race. What is that? And, is it possible for more than one boat to not do this “Special effort”? If som, will all of those be scored 10th?

I’m a bit worried, because we’re running the Norwegian Nationals next week(end).

regards,

Martin

Hi Martin

Quingdao (& Olympics) do not have Qual & Finals so they are a ‘simple’ series with a Medals race at the end.

The unusual Instruction reads:

A boat assigned to compete in the medal race shall make a genuine effort to start, sail the course and finish. A breach of this instruction will not be grounds for a protest by a boat. This changes rule 60.1(a). The penalty for this breach will be ranking the boat tenth in the regatta

I suspect that this has been put in because a boat can be in a position to win the Gold Medal, even if it finishes 10th in the Medal race.

To make sure that the Medal race is still a ‘real’ race, this SI says if you don’t try hard you won’t be given a medal!!

I am sure that some people will be horrified at this Instruction - who decides etc etc but let’s not tie up SUG space on debating its merits.

I don’t think that you need to worry too much

These formats are still in their development stages & I presume that you are using Addendum C Qual & flights

As the Quingdao SIs have yet to be published, it’s a bit difficult to let you have a copy.

In hindsight, I perhaps should have sent a private email to Rory.

Sorry Martin & any others :frowning:

I see this as a very good discussion, and I’m glad you’re not sending it as a private e-mail but to the SUG.

My worries is NOT because of you, or this posting. I’m worried anyway, especially since I’ve not seen the SI yet!

I was not thinking of the olympics as one fleet… I was thinking more like the worlds… Do not know why!

Hi Rory

I have just received a draft copy of the SIs for your event
As far as I can see, the 'special' requirements other than a normal series are:
19.1 In the Series Scoring tab tick apply App A8.1 & A8.2

DO NOT tick the B8.8 option

19.3(a) In the Finals & Medal Races tab tick last race is a medal race and Auto Label...

DO NOT tick anything in the Big Event tab

19.3(b) You will need to set up special letter codes for the medal race.
Create a new code of MDNF (which means DNF in the Medal Race) and set the points as 11.
Any other 'M' letter score needed, can be linked to this code.
19.6 If this is needed, I suggest that you create a code of MDNT (Medal Did Not Try??)
This code can be linked to set the code by hand.
If this code is ever needed, it would need manual input to set the points so that the boat's total net score puts it in 10th place in the regatta overall.
For the benefit of interested SUG members, ISAF have developed a new Instruction which requires boats to make a genuine effort in the Medal race.
The penalty for a breach of this instruction is automatic 10th place in the regatta.
I cannot see anything else which is 'special' but please do not hesitate to contact SUG if you have any other queries, after Jerome's visit

Regards

Ralph
