Merged Series Help Needed

We have three series where DNC is scored as the number of boats in the
best attended race in each series. We want to merge these three
series to get an overall championship, but our si's say that the dnc
for the overall will not change from it's value in the individual
series. If dnc = 7 in series A, 8 in series B, and 9 in series C, the
merged results should retain those values. However, Sailwave
recalculates dnc in the merged series making thm all 9's. Is there
anyway to tell Sailwave NOT to recalculate dnc when scoring after a
merge?

Hi cycscorer,

Nothing explicitly in there to do it. The problem with club racing is that
many clubs move away from RRS and I can't facilitate it. I thinking about
slicing in the equivalent of visual basic and just hardwire the RRS - then
if any clubs move away form this they use VB to tweak the scoring
themselves. The trouble is the merged DCN is not really DCN anymore - one
way around it would be to set up a new code called OLDDNC with the method to
enter point by hand but its a biut of a yuk....

Thanks, Colin. I agree, though I
hadn’t thought of it that way – in the merged series, what I want
is not DNC anymore. Would it be possible to allow user defined
codes that retain their value when merging series? We got around it as
you suggest by entering the points by hand in the merged series, but “a
bit of a yuk” understates the difficulty in getting it right as you
change many scores.
Ideally, a new code that I could define with the additional parameter of not
changing would do it, but if that is too hard for you, I will lobby my club to
change the si’s .

Interesting idea… It is easier to
replace the DNC’s once you’re in Excel, but then what? We’re
using 1.57 and the only export I find is to export a series summary to the
clipboard, which I then paste into an Excel spread sheet. So far, so
good. I can then replace or set the DNC-s to the values I want, but then
there is no “score fleets” button in Excel, so how do I get the
final results? If I then import the results back into Sailwave, I can
only get it to import all the results as one fleet. And some of the
scores come in with negative values. Even if I got all that sorted out, I
have lost all my times so I can’t score using alternate scoring systems (like
PHRF TOT instead of TOD) for the annual analysis of what should we do next
year.

Bottom line is I can’t figure it
out. If I’m missing the obvious, please help. Otherwise, I
think it sure would be nice if Colin knew an easy way to let me define a code
like SDNC (special dnc) that acted just like the dnc code, but was not
recalculated when it was merged with another series. Like I said, I
suspect I’ll be suggesting an si change.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Will

What I was suggesting was a final series in Excel which just needed some fine tuning for the values of DNC & simple recalculation

My suggestion was based upon DNCs not having any significant impact on the main placings but then I could be wrong …

The SI change makes much more sense but no doubt you could meet opposition from some of the diehards.

I remember in my early days of SW trying to deal with a ‘local variation’ of Appendix A

When I suggested a change to bring it into line with RRS, the Sailing Committee threw it out.

So what I did was to make minor changes without anyone knowing (it had no effect on who won the chocolates).

The next year I repeated my proposal to change to the SIs.

Again it was thrown out but when I told everyone that I had been using my proposed change for the last 6 months, everyone realised that the change was not the issue they thought it would be.

How many of your members check that total points are correct, including working out the different values for DNC???

If there is a reluctance to change, I would make sure that results were always published as DNC & not the points for that value,

then go for it

Regards

Ralph

Hi Will,

Yes Ia gree, I need to do somerhting about this; its a fairly common requirement. Locking a set of results is probably the way to go, or easier, when importing add option to create all results as fixed points code.
