Multiple Rating Systems in single race?

Broome Sailing Club currently uses “Finishing Line” software but looking for something easier to use.

I downloaded Sailwave and ran my last seasons race results through it using VYC Yardstick Rating system and the results tallied (thankfully!).

However, we currently award results using both Yardstick and (rolling) Handicap Ratings. Can this be done in Sailwave? i.e. a single entry of race times but results calculated using the two rating systems?

Thank you,

I’ll probably use AMS Rating system for our Handicap results, but obviously don’t want to enter race times twice

Hi John,

Short answer, Yes. Sailwave can score using multiple rating systems

in one file. I have used it to score boats against 3 different
rating systems in one file. The functionality you need to look at is
Aliases. This will allow you to enter finish times once and score
against different rating systems with different ratings.

Kind regards,
Huw

John,

What method are you using to compute rolling handicaps?

ADSC also awards results using both a yardstick (PY) and a rolling handicap (time on time). The latter are done using Excel spreadsheets and I’m looking for a better way.

Will be glad to have any tips.

Ian,

The latest version of Sailwave has incorporated facilities to use an

external Excel spreadsheet for revising (creating rolling ratings).
The default is all for the RYA NHC rating system, but others have
created a modified Excel file to reflect their mechanisms/algorithms
for recalculating/producing a new handicap.

Hi Ian

I see Huw has just posted while I was writing this. Huw is correct - Your
best approach would be to use the NHC in external mode where you can
control the algorithm that is used for the handicap modification

NHC (National Handicap for Cruisers) is a progressive handicap developed by
the RYA and Sailwave supports NHC in internal and external mode. In
Internal mode all the calculations are done using the fixed rules for NHC
and Excel is not used/needed - in external mode the results for each race
are sent to Excel fully automatically (Excel is automatically started and a
predefined template auto loaded) The new calculated rating is
automatically transferred back into the next race within Sailwave. So
although the calculation for the new handicap rating is done via Excel the
scorer does not have to use/interact with Excel at all. Just the person
defining the algorithm needs to understand how Excel to set it up.

The templates for the NHC algorithm are supplied with the Sailwave download
so have a play with that and you will see how it works - Any questions
please come back, but it is easy to use the only difficult part is setting
up the template which is once off task.

Okay, “Alias” it is. I can see how to duplicate a boat/entrant and (in my case) I’ve put the duplicate in a different fleet.

However, then I’m lost.

Do I have to enter the time for each boat twice?

When I “Score Series” I can only enter one scoring system, not the two I require.

Do you know if there is a cheat-sheet or some such available? I’ve searched without success. Lots of items mention using Alias when results required by different Scoring Systems, but not how to.

Sorry if I’m being dumb :frowning:

Hi John

There is this, on the group here, which includes a link to a video.

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/sailwave/conversations/messages/14030

I have also attached a sample that is using Aliasing, in this case NHC although it could be any other, so you can have a play with this one.

You only have to enter the time once, the time for the alias will be entered automatically.

Please don’t hesitate to ask if you still have a problem after looking at these.

Regards

Jon

Hi John,

I have a more complicated set-up involving multiple aliases, 2

rating systems (IRC & RYA NHC) and 2 scoring systems (Standard
Low Point and a High Point) if you want would like it.

I also did a file using multiple aliases so competitors could be

scored using 3 different ratings systems (IRC, RAY NHC & Club
rating system) and 2 different scoring systems (Standard Low Point
and a High Point).

A warning - if you or others do make use of the external calculation

mode using Excel beware there is a limit on the number of
competitors that the interface tansfers. Jon can be more specific.
But I did run into the problem.

Kind regards,
Huw

Thanks everyone for you help and support. I’ll now go away and play (with some known results from last season) to see how I get on with Sailwave.

No doubt I’ll be back if/when I get stuck.
