Multiple sorting

Have got an event coming up in which I will have 2 classes racing and 5 divisions for both classes

Is there a way to score them in 1 Sailwave file prioritising splitting classes then splitting divisions within each class?

Matt

Hi Matt,

I think you have 2 options.

Setup up Alias in sailwave, or use the prize table program.

Setting up Alias go to setup, select user interface, then Competing Alias.

Remember that what you put in a column may not be exactly as the column name suggests and you can re-name columns.

I will use a recent example I had where we had for Class Laser Standard, Laser Radial, and Laser 4.7, and we had Age groups of apprentice, master, Grand master, great grand master and legend.

Now decide on a column to score on. For this example I will use fleet.

Now create alias for all competitors. Alias will show the results entered in the parent.

Use tools set competitor to copy class to the fleet column.

Then use tools set competitor, select competitor and select competitors that have Alias <> 0, and append age group to the class, (I have not found out how to put a space between the class and age group in Sailwave).

Now when you score on fleet you should get a split for class than, then a split that showing the 18 groups that were created.

Remember to include all the fleets in the start, if you are using multiple starts. For a single start select all.

The drop profile may change the rankings in the sub groups compared to the main group.

The prize table program is on the Sailwave web site and is fairly self-explanatory.

You could then score all competitors as 1 group or 2 groups based on class.

The prize table program will sort through and find the competitors in the sub category in rank order of the original scoring system, and showing the points they received in the original scoring system.

My preference is to have the competitors nominate on computer, confirm details at registration, then export the competitor list to Excel where I would do things like check the number for the minimum number of digits required and truncate when possible, (e.g. reduce a 6 digit Laser number to 3 to 4 digits, easier on the scorer) to keep each competitor unique and combine any columns of information I can with spaces to make it look tidy, then import it into Sailwave.

It is a must to do some testing before your regatta. I find I am the weak link in what Sailwave can do.

I hope this is helpful.

Regards JohnL.

What exactly do you want to do? You can choose to "score by" various
groups. So, you could score by "class" and publish and then score by
"division" and then publish. That would give you two different HTML
files. The "division" names would have to be different for the two
different classes.

Other options are also possible depending on what you want.

Hi Matt,

You need to be clear on what is defined in the NoR & SI's.

Are the Divisions in both classes to re-scored or are the results
to be extracted from the Class results. This can make a
difference. If you re-score you may find that a boat in a
particular division within a class is ranked above another boat in
the same division but they are reversed in the division standings/
I know this can happen as I had it happen to me when scoring an
Optimist event years ago.

In my experience most NoR/SI's now included wording to the effect

that divisional results will be extracted from the overall ranking
and not re-scored.

As has already been mention you could use the prize functionality

built-in to Sailwave or for slightly more flexibility you could
use Jon’s external utility SWPrize
[].

Kind regards,

Huw

Thanks Huw

The division results are to be extracted from the class results for ease of prize giving/ viewing

You say there is a prize function within Sailwave? I’l have a play

Hi Matt,

If it’s for prizes then I would personally use the SWPrize program which Huw gave you a list for previously

If it’s for publishing on a website

As you are extracting the results and possibly which to publish these at the end of the regatta what I would normally do is:-

Score the series then-

Using the Menu - Tools set competitor field set the exclude field to 1 for all the competitors other than the subdivision you wish to publish.

Then click the X in the ribbon to exclude all but the division

Now use the Menu - Tools seed competitor field to seed the Rank starting at 1 increment by 1

Now publish without rescoring

Set the Exclude back to 0 for all competitors untick the X and rescore and repeat the above for any other divisions.

After you have done it once you will find it very quick and easy.
