NCH scoring puzzle

Hello all,

Can anyone help me straighten out the following snag?.

I use NCH3 individual handicapping to score my clubs monthly mug series. The results up to Race 5 are shown in the attached file ‘Monthly Mug Commodores Cup DHH 2017 old.blw’

The results up to Race 7 are shown in the second file (same file name without ‘old’).

My issue is that when I rescore the series with R6 and R7 included, Sailwave changes the competitor race ratings and places in the prior races. See for example the results for competitor K. Sees. In the ‘old’ file he is scored 1st in R3 and R4, whereas in the updated file he is placed 3rd tied and 3rd respectively.

Since I have already published the earlier results I would dearly like to figure out what is going on!

All suggestions much appreciated.

Just to add to my earlier query, I got a new laptop recently and installed Sailwave V2.19.8 and the NCH templates from the web page. I have noticed that my old computer reproduces the original results, while my new machine gives different results!

What would cause this?

Thanks

Ian

Hi Ian - As you are using the external templates to do the calculations - Could you please also attach a copy of the templates you are using.

These will be named NHC3.xls by default

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply. Just to update–I find the issue seems to relate to a new laptop and Sailwave reinstall, insofar as when I use my old computer I can reproduce the original results. Both computers have several Excel templates in the folder that is selected in global options, with file names like SWNHC3, SWNHC3-NHC 2013, SWNHC2015 etc. All downloaded from the web. I have attached copies of the templates that Sailwave saves in the results folder, which I assume are what it uses for this series. Does this make any sense to you?

Best regards

Ian

Hi Ian,
The two spreadsheets you sent - were identical according to http://www.cloudyexcel.com/compare-excel/

Sailwave will use the SWNHC3.xls template from your templates directory. If you are getting different results then these must be different.

Check the version on the Config sheet to make sure they are both the same.

If you have the two machines available then it should be very easy to see what is different.

When you click score then it will pause with the data displayed in Excel Save this and send me it for both the old and the new machines.

Hi John,

Here are the two templates: one from my ‘old’ computer and the other from the ‘new’ both saved with results for R4 in the series. As I read it, the elapsed times in each sheet are identical but differences appear in the "this race handicap’ column which of course give different corrected times and rankings.

BTW my old machine is running Excel 2003 while the new one is the current version of Excel. I see warnings when I saved re ‘loss of functionality in formula translation’. Could this be a source of difference?

Thanks for your support. Will be glad to have your insights.

Ian

Hi Ian

It looks like on the old PC you are using a very very old version of Excel which doesn’t support the Standard Deviation calculation.

If you look at cell S51 There is an error with Invalid name error however on the new version this is working fine. The formula in the cell is “=STDEV.P(S9:S49)”

This will then affect all the calculations and hence the differences

For those who may be still using an older version of Excel the
equivalent function for “=STDEV.P(S9:S49)” is
“=STDEVP(S9:S49)”

Cheers,
Alan.

Many thanks John and Alan for your insights. The old version of Excel seems to explain the issue.
