New Competitors enter via Sail Number Wizard

Jon,

Would it be possible to enter additional fields, particularly class, when adding a new competitor using the Sail Number Wizard?

Currently you have to close the sail number wizard, open the edit competitor window, add info, close window and restart sail number wizard. This is not possible whilst finishinh boats (one of which has inadvertantly been missed) or as we plan when tally competitors out, (and a new compeitor has decided to enter after the office has closed) as the queue can get very long! If the new button on the wizard could opewn the edit competitor window this could be quickly closed if not required, or one of two fields could be easily added.

I expect this is a minority requirement, but would be very useful to a few.

Bob

Hi Bob,

I assume that you must be entering results on the water (where you are 100% sure that the competitor exists). Which is something I personally rarely do. I am always entering the results retrospectively. If I have a number that is not in the Sailwave then it is usually because someone has changed sails, registered with the wrong sail number or the spotter has misread the sailno(possibly transcribed it incorrectly). I then skip over it and come back once all the ones I can enter are in. Often its obvious what the number was when you only have 2 or 3 left without a result. Actually I’m quite excited to use the new feature of the alternative sail no in earnest. As I score a lot of windsurfing events the number of times people register with 2 sail nos (one for their change down if it gets windy) is amazing. So this new feature should help that. Also the new Resolver feature where you can just type in a boat name or Helm name without knowing the sail no is going to help me as well.

It wouldn’t be very easy to code, but I have taken note and when I release one of my new add-ons which I’m playing with may be I can build it into that. Whats this new add on I hear you ask. I’m experimenting with remote result entry where Sailwave is running on a machine somewhere, and you are at a browser somewhere else, PC or iOS or Android and the Sail No wizard effectively runs in that browser and sends its results back to Sailwave. Don’t get too excited today as its going to be a while before I release it, as my current priority is the New Cruiser handicaping. But its coming.

Jon,

For non regatta racing we would have a use for this. We are lucky if people even sign on for a club race, but week 1 and week 2’s racers will be 50% different. If I’ve satisfied myself the scorer got it right (might have been me  ) I click add competitor but it’d be worth that asking for additional info - at least a class to get a PY would be useful.

Hi Calum,

For club racing you shouldn’t need it because if you have all the club members that race already in the file and marked as excluded you can have Sailwave automatically include a competitor if you enter them using then Sail No Wizard and using the * feature in the new 2.8.4 you can even do it by boat name, owner or helm using the resolver. Just tick the box on the first tab of the Sail Number Wizard.

Does this work for you?

Thanks Jon.

Not a model I’ve used before. So I should export my entire membership list by boat and sail number etc, create a huge sailwave file and go from there? Exclude them all. Make that my template for the year and copy it for each series to set up the serials…

So it would only be any new boat?

Basically yes although you would only have to enter members that are likely to race - that would make your entry of competitors very easy. I wouldn’t then expect to get a boat competing in a race if they were not a club member or hadn’t notified you before the race.
