New NHC series, copy competitors, NOT "New Rating"

I’ve tried searching the archives, and found lots of topic on starting a new series and using the last series NHC “New Rating”. I think that’s great if you have all the same boats in both series, but it would seem potentially unfair (one way or the other) for any new boats entering the new series. These new boats would need the baseline rating (from the RYA NHC Calculator) and everyone else would have adjusted ratings from last season. New season can mean new sails, new crew, etc., so a series separated by 8 months (Lake Michigan, Northern USA) doesn’t seem reasonable to expect the same adjusted ratings.

Can someone please tell me how to start a new series and use the initial rating, not the new rating? I’ve deleted all but race #1 (and cleared the results of race #1), but the new rating is still the same as the most recent New Rating from the last series. I’d rather not hand enter all of the previous boats…just the new ones.

Secondly, I’d be open to arguments (reasoning) as to why I should continue to use last series’ New Rating despite new boats entering with their baseline rating (especially considering the 8 month gap as mentioned above).

Regards,

Chad

Hi Chad,

There are two ways of getting a new series with essentially the

same set of competitors. The one you have been using of taking a
copy and deleting all races except race 1. The other way is to
start a new series and then import competitors from an existing
Sailwave file. The latter will not bring in the last NHC rating.

The way to clear the last rating from the NHC calculation you

need to click ‘Tools’ on menu bar then select ‘Set competitor
field’ option. Make sure that you are select the appropriate
competitors which may be all, so you will not want any selection
criteria. In the ‘Field to change’ drop down list select ‘New
rating’. Make sure the ‘Set this value’ is blank.

Hope this helps you.

Kind regards,

Huw

Thanks Huw.

Starting a new series seems to reset too many things, so just copying a previous series seems best.

The key was indeed “Set Competitor Field”. Thanks much for that!!

Hi Chad, - Just one small addition to Huw’s answer.

Normally you would delete all but the last race from the file - this leaves the new rating in the rating for what then becomes race 1 of the new series.

If you don’t want to use the new rating you can delete all races and Sailwave will automatically add back a blank race one without the new ratings

As to fairness - There is no way that Sailwave can know that a boat has new equipment such as new sails - but if it does make them sail faster then Sailwave will gradually adjust the rating to reflect it. For boats joining the series, when ratings are adjusted they are realigned to be the average of base ratings for the boats taking part, so it is not that the boats ratings have all been adjusted in one direction.

With NHC the only way to keep winning is to be constantly improving.
