New Prizes Format

I knew I should have read the version history before upgrading! Any thoughts on 2.02 Build 5 how to manage multiple prizes that don't map easily to fields. I have 14 non-standard prizes in a regatta starting this weekend, which were previously done by just selecting eligible competitors manually. Now it has to be done by formula. Prizes include First Lady Helm, First Lady Crew, First under 21, First over 65, First average age over 50, First new competitor, First visitor, first blood related helm/crew, etc., etc.

With only two "AND" expressions, and three "OR" expressions, and no ability to add 14 columns for prize eligibility, it's looking a bit tricky.

Thanks, Ian.

Sounds familiar - just like some SIs I prepared the other day!

Hi Ian,

The only difference between build 4 and build 5 is the prize thing so
that’s always an option while we work out how to proceed.

Sailwave has Age fields so they can be used. And Sex fields. I
handled visitor by using an expression of the form “Club <>
MyYachtClub”, where MyYachyClub was “Mumbles” in my case.

The expression editor could have a ‘these competitors’ option in
addition to the expression…

Use build 4 for now - I’ll think about it. An obvious generic
solution is to use a field to list the prizes that a competitor is
eligible for e.g. “Visitor,FCrew,Over65” then in prize ecxpressions use
“field contains 'prizeName” - e.g. “Division contains FCrew”. But I’m
not sure if the expression editor has contains in it - easily added.
Could prob do that today if it would be useful.

I suppose the advantage of the select method was that somebody that
hhas all this knowledge in their head can just select away without
having to define it all in Sailave.

Anybody else got any ideas…?

I think it was the right way to go.

I havent looked yet but it sounds like the right way to proceed.
Last year for the toppers i ended up writing a separate application to extract
the results for the different trophies so people could see who was in each one and
where they stood etc. Then they could also complain and we could easily update
the data to reflect the different search criteria.

So this sound like it is heading in the right direction to me.

Trying to manually select the right things from 300 entries over
& over again as it was corrected wasn’t something i wanted to do.

I thing the adding field contains would be a good solution as an
additional expression, maybe does not contain might also be useful to avoid
having to add something to every competitor in some cases. Ie adding something
like 4.2 for the sailors with 4.2 topper rigs would allow does not contain to
select those with full figs without having to add a value for the other 280
competitors at the nationals.

Hi Colin,

‘field contains’ would be a perfect solution. I could list all of a competitors eligible prizes into the ‘notes’ field or similar. As you say, not in build 5, but if you add it, I’ll certainly use it! Not urgent as the prizes don’t get handed out until next week, and I can also roll back to build 4 (thanks for the link).

Another one for thought (no action needed as manual calculation is not difficult) is in Team Rankings, where teams self-nominate. Current build caters for teams arranged by club, nationality, fleet or class. Current regatta allows three boats to declare as a team for an additional team prize, based on aggregate results.

Thanks indeed,

Ian.

Anybody else got any ideas…?

I think it was the right way to go.

Create some additional fields “Lady Helm”, “Lady Crew”, etc. and use a formula “Lady Helm” = YES.

OR

Alternatively you could use aliases to setup subfleets for each of the different categories; “Lady Helm”, “Lady Crew”, etc. See the results posted for Lido 14’s, Lido 14 A, Lido 14 B, Lido 14 Women, Lido 14 Junior. There is only one fleet and one start, but we score the A, B, Women and Junior as subfleets using aliases.

Sounds familiar - just like some SIs I prepared the other day!

Mark,

Interesting suggestions. I have to admit to being a recent convert to Sailwave, and have figured many key functions, but creating additional fields isn’t one I’ve found. I can see how to edit the 27 default fields, but could you perhaps point me towards how to create new ones? Many thanks,

Ian.

If you click on the User Interface tab and select Extra Competitor columns you will have a lot more columns. You can rename one of the columns for the specific use.
