new rrs 40.2

With respect to this new rule:-

"40.2 A trapeze or hiking harness shall have a device capable of quickly
releasing the competitor from the boat at all times while in use."

Deos anybody know if the normal hook and ring satisfy? i.e. is the rule an
attempt to stop folk 'tying' thsemselves to the boat or is it an attempt to
make folk use the new quick release mechanisms, making the standard
hook/ring illegal...?

Colin,

My interpretation is that it is making the existing hook and ring illegal,
re the delayed implementation date of of 1st January 2006.

As an aside I have not found any reference on the RYA web site to the
2005-2008 Racing Rules of Sailing being available from the ISAF web site.

Kind regards,
Huw

Hi Huw,

That is my interpretation of the rule too (based on the ISAF minutes/news
etc), but as somebody else pointed out to me that's not what the rule
actually seems to say because of "...while in use". While "in use" a
standard hook and ring is quickly releasable at all times; it's may not be
after capsizing and the hook gets attached to something else, but then the
trapeze is not "in use"...

As an aside I have not found any reference on the RYA web site to the
2005-2008 Racing Rules of Sailing being available from the ISAF web site.

Perhaps it's the page load time of the RYA site (it's soooo slow); rules are
public on ISAF site now...

...Ah - "in use" means "being worn". Why not simplify then...

40.2 A trapeze or hiking harness shall have a device capable of quickly
releasing the competitor from the boat at all times.
