New Series suggestion

I have a suggestion for Sailwave. Could
you put in a method where the end user could create a template with the
necessary scoring system, competitors, etc. so when you click on New Series
option, you can create a new race based on the template. Maybe even
have options along with the number of races and number of competitors to
include or exclude certain options from the template. I am thinking
like how you can in Microsoft Word create a template then open a new document
using the template.

Hi Zeff,

Everytime I go to do something like that I think... well it's not any
different to just creating some series as templates and then just
opening the appropriate one when you want a new series...

The only advantage as far as I can see with a dedicated solution is
that they would be readily available from the New menu without having
to browse for them via File+Open. Also perhaps the Save menu would
be disabled for series that had been created via New until a
File+SaveAs.

I'll probably do the tweak but for now use File+Open on files
previously set up the way you want them.

Maybe have some checkmarks to include or exclude them individually (say you want to have the scoring system only but there is a whole different set of competitors. Maybe have a wizard when you create a new series you are able to select a previous series and import certain competitors from there. (I am full of ideas here now that I am thinking about it) Or, have a facility where you can keep an "address book" of competitors which you can choose which competitors raced for a particular series.

Example: File --> New Series... Click on address book and multi select competitors that are in the series. Choose the template that includes a particular scoring series, setup (which columns you want displayed in the scoring), etc. Click New and you are all set to go.

Hi Zeff,

Thanks for your thoughts. Note that you can have lists of competitors now - just create some series with full competitors lists as templates and then use File+Import+CompetitorsFromAnotherSailwaveSeries and multi-select those required.

Prior to starting to use Sailwave at our club we used a scoring and race management system developed by one of our members. There were several features that the software included that are not present in Sailwave which eased some of the regatta management issues. I was wondering if you had given any thought to the including following options in Sailwave.

The ability to import individual competitor and boat data from previous regattas into the current regatta. When entering a competitor in a regatta it would search old regattas to see if it could find that name. If it located the competitor or boat in a prior regatta it would prompt you and copy the old regatta information to the new regatta.

We had the ability to keep personal information about competitors, such as home address, phone number, e-mail address, etc. We could then promote futuire regattas by producing mailing labels, e-mail list etc.

Another problem with that is that you
have to set the new series to 1 competitor, import everyone from the selected
series then delete that initial competitor. If you had an address
book you could check off the competitors and your new series would be there.
The address book could have groups. Select the group and those
competitors would be added to the new series. You could even expand

Agreed, but only useful if you want to select consecutive competitors. A check box facility to select competitors in any order would save having to import one or two at a time and then repeat the process again and again. We have over 300 members and up to four race series running each week with different groups of members competing in one or more series, often with different crews or boats, so a data base of all competitors, built up as each race is entered, with a once only pick and choose facility (a wizard) would be an absolute boon. The ability to save one series as another is of value only where there are not a significant change to the entrants between one race/series and another.

I’m missing something here. I guess I don’t see the difference between running the import-from-another-series wizard and clicking on those competitors you want in the series - and - running a competitor database wizard and ticking each competitor you want in the series…

We have over 300 members and up to four race series running each week with different groups of members competing in one or more series, often with different crews or boats, so a data base of all competitors, built up as each race is entered, <

Oh I see - the database is dynamic - that’s the difference - is that right…?

If so I can see what I’ve been missing up until now…

What people have to do date is stick everybody in a ‘template’ series and always pick competitors from that - but yes, it’d need maintaining…

I would guess Laura et al were trying to make me understand the same thing over a year ago…

The
import competitor wizard does have multi-select - hold the shift key when
making a selection and it auto selects everything between the last selection
and the newly selected one. Standard windows behaviour I think.

The template could have competitors, races, scoring system, etc as defaults.

Hi Bill,

I think the problem is that people would like to import easily by picking competitors across N series… In the past I’ve said the solution is to have one big competitor series and import from that - i.e. if a new competitor comes along - add him/her into the ‘competitor’ series and then import as required - but I like the idea of a dynamic competitor list - it’d probably just a be a series file - but created on the fly…

Must get XP one day - it looks so pretty.

NB: In fact I think you can just click to get multiple selections… Then click a selected line to deselect etc.

Agreed, but only useful if you want to select consecutive competitors. One problem that I have with creating the “big competitor” list is identifying who is a new competitor and who has competed in a prior regatta. We run many large events and in a three year period can expect to have about 1,000 different boats sail at the club.

A method of creating a pick list by merging multiple regattas together would be helpful. It would be great if we could have several freeform notes columns to store, address1, address2, city, state (sorry county for the brits), e-mail address, phone no. etc…

Thanks

The previous scoring system that was used at our club allowed you to pick the competitor from a list. You entered the last name Smith and it would show you all the Smith’s that had sailed in the last three years. If the name was there you selected it and all the competitor information was copied from the other record.

Maybe have some checkmarks to include or exclude them individually

Hi Mark, big competitor list point noted. More fields such as you
describe are planned. No dates yet though. I might do it sooner
than later because it's useful to most users. CJ.

Hi Bill,

I think the problem is that people would like to import easily by

picking

competitors across N series... In the past I've said the solution

is to

have one big competitor series and import from that - i.e. if a new
competitor comes along - add him/her into the 'competitor' series

and then

import as required - but I like the idea of a dynamic competitor

probably just a be a series file - but created on the fly...

Must get XP one day - it looks so pretty.

NB: In fact I think you can just click to get multiple

Agreed, but only useful if you want to select consecutive

competitors. A

check box facility to select competitors in any order would save

having to

import one or two at a time and then repeat the process again and

again. We

have over 300 members and up to four race series running each week

with

different groups of members competing in one or more series, often

with

different crews or boats, so a data base of all competitors, built

up as

each race is entered, with a once only pick and choose facility (a

would be an absolute boon. The ability to save one series as

value only where there are not a significant change to the entrants

between

one race/series and another.

The template could have competitors, races, scoring system, etc as

defaults.

Maybe have some checkmarks to include or exclude them individually

(say you

I was thinking that the following three changes in combination would greatly enhance the regatta administration process and I believe would be useful for everyone.

  1. Provide an option on the import competitors function that would allow you to merge the competitor and boat information into a “Master” regatta and avoid the creation of duplicates. Currently when you import competitors from a regatta into a “Master Series” you have to be careful not to create duplicates. We have over a 1,000 different boats that sail at our club over a three year period and it is very difficult to avoid creating duplicates when importing a regatta into a “master” regatta file. A feature that avoided the duplicates would then make it easy to maintain a “Master” regatta file of everyone who has sailed at the club in the past several years.

  2. Provide a feature on the add new competitor function that will search the master regatta and then copy the competitors information. This would enable the race administration office to perform a similar procedure for both new and returning competitors. If the entry is for some one that has previously sailed at the club, the competitor would be found and the information can be copied from the “Master regatta”. If the competitor is sailing for the first time at the club, they would then enter the information.

  3. Add ten(?) or so notes fields that can be used to store address, city, state/county, zip/postal code, e-mail, etc. A file can then be exported from the “master” regatta to produce an e-mail or mailing list to promote your next regatta. For those of you familiar with word, it would be fairly easy to create a mail merge file and create customized invites and NOR’s with everything all ready completed on the entry form. The other columns could be used for storing other information that race admin has to keep for major regattas such as T-shirts ordered, dinners ordered, measurement completed, crew weight, etc, etc, etc…

I think the combination of the three changes would greatly improve the Race Admin side of Sailwave.

Keep up the great work Colin, it is greatly appreciated…

        defaults.
        > Maybe have some checkmarks to include or exclude them
individually
        (say you

        facility

        >
        > Example: File --> New Series… Click on address book and multi
        select
        > competitors that are in the series. Choose the template that
        includes a

        in the
