Hi Huw
Thank you for your thoughts.
I don't think it's a stupid question. I wondered about this too - as
it's a laptop it has a built in soundcard so there is no simple
speaker. The sound mixer does however have an input called PC
Speaker. I've turned that right up and I now hear a faint click when
it should beep - just as if it's trying to do something and failing.
I've also had a hunt through the registry settings for the sound
scheme to try and see if I can work out what's going on, in XP the
sound is the "default beep" and in Win98 the equivalent is
the "default sound" and as far as I can tell from the registry they
are set up in exactly the same way.
I did wonder if the beep was sent to the PC speaker and then Windows
reroutes it to the sound card whether this might be handled
differently in different versions of Windows.
And that's as far as I've got - anyone else out there using W98.
Russell
Russel,
It may be a stupid question but does the Windows 98 PC make a sound
when it is booting normally two beeps from the standard little
speaker
or form some other application?
Can't help with shortcuts on Windows 98 desktops, I only have access
to Windows 2000 Pro, Windows XP Pro and Windows Vista Home plus
Linux.
Kind regards,
Huw
