New User - Beep/Columns/Popups/elapsed times/Shortcuts

Hi All

I'm new to using sailwave this year and have been asked by my club to
help a computer novice master sailwave. I've been setting up
sailwave on an old laptop (Windows 98) for this purpose and I've
encountered a number of snags.

The sail number wizard should beep but it doesn't - am I missing a
sound file or something similar?

How do I make the division column appear - it doesn't appear in the
list of columns when I click the columns icon.

Is there any way to make this work better on an 800 by 600 screen -
most of the popup messages appear with the OK button off the bottom
of the screen and the program doesn't remember the position if you
move them. To get round this for now I've edited the registry so
they all appear maximised - which works but looks very odd.

When entering results using the sail number wizard is there any way
to set the entry type so that you don't have to click the "elapsed
time" (or other) radio button for every competitor.

Why doesn't the installation create any shortcuts?

I'll probably have more questions but that's all for now. I'd be
grateful for any help.

Russell

Not qualified to answer all the questions, but:

When entering results using the sail number wizard is there any way
to set the entry type so that you don’t have to click the “elapsed
time” (or other) radio button for every competitor.

** - Use `Edit Race’ to specify what results you are entering - position, elapsed time or finish time.

Why doesn’t the installation create any shortcuts?

** - The installation normally creates a desktop shortcut, but you should be able to create your own if it doesn’t.

Thank you Malcolm I could have taken a long time finding that in Edit
Race - but of course now you've told me I think "I should have found
that".

I've also solved my division column question for myself.

Can anyone help with the beep and the popup positions?

Russel,

It may be a stupid question but does the Windows 98 PC make a sound
when it is booting normally two beeps from the standard little speaker
or form some other application?

Can't help with shortcuts on Windows 98 desktops, I only have access

Hi Huw

Thank you for your thoughts.

I don't think it's a stupid question. I wondered about this too - as
it's a laptop it has a built in soundcard so there is no simple
speaker. The sound mixer does however have an input called PC
Speaker. I've turned that right up and I now hear a faint click when
it should beep - just as if it's trying to do something and failing.

I've also had a hunt through the registry settings for the sound
scheme to try and see if I can work out what's going on, in XP the
sound is the "default beep" and in Win98 the equivalent is
the "default sound" and as far as I can tell from the registry they
are set up in exactly the same way.

I did wonder if the beep was sent to the PC speaker and then Windows
reroutes it to the sound card whether this might be handled
differently in different versions of Windows.

And that's as far as I've got - anyone else out there using W98.

All PC’s from way back have a system called POST (power on self test).

If things are normal, only one beep if given.

Malcolm Osborne
Sedgefield, South Africa

Original IBM POST error codes

  • 1 short beep - Normal POST - system is OK
  • 2 short beeps - POST error - error code shown on screen
  • No beep - Power supply, system board problem, disconnected cpu, or disconnected speaker,
  • Continuous beep - Power supply, system board, or keyboard
    problem
  • Repeating short beeps - Power supply or system board problem or keyboard
  • Repeating long beeps - memory etc is unseated
  • 1 long, 1 short beep - System board problem
  • 1 long, 2 short beeps - Display adapter
    problem (MDA, CGA)
  • 1 long, 3 short beeps - Enhanced Graphics Adapter (EGA)
  • 3 long beeps - 3270 keyboard card

Hi Colin

The popup question was about the windows that open while you're using
the program.

Is there any way to make them work better on an 800 by 600 screen -
most of the popup messages appear with the OK button off the bottom of
the screen and the program doesn't remember the position if you move
them. To get round this for now I've edited the registry so they all
appear maximised - which works but looks very odd.

I suppose this could be a W98 behaviour too - as I suspect the registry
editing might be different.

What's the least hungry operating sytem that you do test on? We don't
have mains power at the sailing club and discarded laptops that will
run XP are hard to come by.

Russell

i dont test on w98 anymoew since its a dead os -
not supported my ms anymore. i use xp and vista - but its probably ok
with 2000.
