New User

Regardless of what Colin says, I'm a new user NOT afraid to ask
questions!!! Ha! That's why I've joined this user group!

Bob is the new vice commodore of our sailing club, so guess who gets
to keep score this year! It ain't him!!! Sailwave was recommended
to me, so I've downloaded it, but am at a standstill. I've been
perusing the old posts and see various references to a user manual,
but it looks like you all just keep your own pertinent information
and then use that information as a "user manual." Is there such a
thing as an actual user manual?

I have the first race participants entered for our Wednesday night
spring series; however, I can't seem to enter each boat's PHRF
rating into the program. Where and how do I do this? I have each
boat's PHRF rating on an Excel spreadsheet. I've entered the actual
elapsed times for each boat; does the software calculate the
corrected time? How?

I see where it can rank all the boats per race; however, here's a
tough one! Each crew that volunteers to work race committee gets a
first place for that race. When I tried to sort with actual times
plus my first place, I got an error message stating that I couldn't
sort with both types of rankings in the column. How am I going to
put each volunteer boat in first place for that night?

I know I'm overlooking something, and I'm normally pretty good at
figuring out new software, but Sailwave has me stumped. Can anyone
talk me through these beginning stages? Thanks...Chris Sheppard

see comments below - I have assumed that you have used the New Series button
(same toolbar as Save) to set up the series and entered your competitors
using the New button:

Is there such a thing as an actual user manual? No, just the FAQ list at
http://www.sailwave.com/index.php?page=library where there is lots of useful
info.

I have the first race participants entered for our Wednesday night spring

of the cells relating to the competitor in question (not under the race
columns) and enter the rating. Alternatively you could convert your Excel
SS to a .csv file in the Ratings folder - see the above link for the
required format etc. - then you should be able to pull up the rating in the
Default Rating drop down menu. You can also enter the rating on a race by
race basis - click on the relevant cell in the race column for the race in
question.

I have each boat's PHRF rating on an Excel spreadsheet. I've entered the
actual elapsed times for each boat; does the software calculate the
corrected time? How? >> Use the Score button, or Score Fleets if you have
more than one start - the start times and other race properties can be set
up by right clicking the race column heading and Edit Race

the Scoring Codes, then set up a new code e.g. VOL which has a fixed score
of '1'. When you enter that 'competitor's' results, tick the Code box and
select your VOL code. Easy!

Hope you get to like Sailwave - having struggled with monolithic Excel
sheets for years it came as a true breath of fresh air. It is very deep
though - I'd encourage you to sit a play with an example file - just push
all the buttons and explore!
It also fits on a floppy disc and will run fine on an ancient Pentium
laptop.......

It helps a lot, Mike, thanks. And I think I'll do as you suggest and "play"
a little. What we did for the forced first place was put my time in as 10
minutes -- quick four-mile race doncha think? Ha! But that forced my first
place as a reward for working race committee. I do agree it's a slick
program -- I'll catch on. Thanks for your quick response!

Oh, and the Excel spreadsheet thing. I saved my PHRF numbers as a .csv
file as instructed, but when I tried to import it, I got an error message
saying "access denied." So I entered them manually, which was fine with
only 12 boats in so far. Will be a pain as we begin to reach the 35-40 we
normally have by mid-summer! Ah, well.

Thanks again.

You can use a special code for this result (rather than RDG or BYE or whatever). I think that is what the OOD code is for ("Officer of the Day"?). In the series scoring panel there is a tab where you can change how each scoring code is scored, and you can make it a fixed score of N points with N=1.

Sorry, or if you're not using the low point scoring system set it up as

Oh! That's kewl, David! What we finally did was finish me at 10 minutes.
Anything less put me in fourth place out of four boats racing that night,
which was weird, but with a 0:10:00 elapsed time, it worked! But I'll try
the race committee code because each week another boat will have to be in
the position I was in this week, and that solution may make it easier!
Thanks! Wish me luck -- first race for me tomorrow night! Short two crew,
so scrambling around trying to get subs. These crew members with kids in
soccer and T-ball -- geez! Where are the priorities! Ha!

Thanks to all of you for your help. I think I'm catching on.

Good idea, Terry, and everyone else jumped on it too. But the vice
commodore, who also happens to be my husband, limited it to one race per
season! Boo hiss! But there's one boat in my fleet I can't seem to beat,
so I tho't doing race committee the first week, I'd at least be in first
place once this season! Ha!

One more question, Colin -- and you'll be able to tell how new I am at this!
What is "PY"? I see you guys all referring to it, and saw it mentioned in
the software. Thanks...Chris Sheppard
