Newbie Questions

I just installed Sailwave (1.47, Beta 8) for the first time along with
uspn2003.csv in the 'Ratings' folder and have some basic questions.

1. There was no Help file, just the 'About Sailwave' window in the Help
menu. Is there not a Help file or did I do something wrong in the
installation?

2. Is there a User Manual somewhere? I scoured the Sailwave web site and
didn't find it. Other than the FAQs, I've not been able to find anything
explaining how to use the application.

3. Even though the USPN rating file is installed, there are no entries in
the Boat Class drop-down menu in the Competitor edit box. How is this
supposed to work?

Thanks for any help or sources of help you can provide.

Hi Ed,

1. There was no Help file, just the 'About Sailwave' window in the Help
menu. Is there not a Help file or did I do something wrong in the
installation?

The only documentation is as per the web site in the documentation link.
This is because Sailwave is still in fact in development; it would be an
unmanageable amount of work to rework the documentation every time I changed
how something worked. Usually this group can supply the answers you
require.

2. Is there a User Manual somewhere? I scoured the Sailwave web site and
didn't find it. Other than the FAQs, I've not been able to find anything
explaining how to use the application.

Ditto.

3. Even though the USPN rating file is installed, there are no entries in
the Boat Class drop-down menu in the Competitor edit box. How is this
supposed to work?

There are 3 things you need to do to set up a series in Sailwave:-

1. Use Edit+Properties to define the event name etc.

2. Use Edit+ScoringSystem to define how you want to score it; to answer
your question, choose USSA PN from here.

3. Create new competitors (Edit menu) and enter their information.

To score the series use Tools+ScoreSeries and then to publish the results
use Publish+Results.

This is about it. If your event is split into seperate fleets there is a
bit more fiddling.

Hope this get's you started. The one-time messages that you see when you
first Sialwave can provide a few useful tips too.

I do realise that a lack of documentation is significant. I have a number
of 'big' development tasks that need doing to get me into a state such that
I can extend the documentation.

Somebody did write a getting started menual - would you like to donate it to
the web site...?

Regards,
Colin

Colin, Jenny Fletcher created a 'Help' file last year. I have just set the Yahoo Group to send this to all new subscribers when they join. It's not completely current but should be able to answer most of the basic questions.

Jenny.... If you could do an upgraded version that would be cool and that could then get sent to newbies too.

Simon, that information is on the web site in more recent form - didn't
somebody do a 'getting started' document...? I used to generate a hellp
file with the FAQ in it but it didn't go down too well as a 'help' file so I
stopped doing it and update the web FAQs as necessary.

Thank you, Colin, for your reply. I understand the documentation situation.

As for my question 3., I had already done everything you outlined. My
question regards the use of the ratings file which does not seem to be
working in version 1.47, Beta 8. The Competitor Edit window shows "USPN" as
the rating system and the file uspn2003.csv is in the Ratings folder. But,
when clicking the Boat Class pull-down menu in the Competitor Edit window,
the boat classes are not listed. I was expecting the boat classes to all be
listed there so one could choose the appropriate one. In fact, the cursor
hover pop-up box says so. I also expected Sailwave to then pull the proper
rating into the Competitor record. But, nothing happens.

So, the only way I can figure out to get ratings into the program is to
manually type in each rating for each competitor. The ratings file and
Sailwave don't seem to provide any help.

Am I doing something wrong? Or, is this a feature that broke in Beta 8?
Does this work for other people?

Thanks again,
Ed

I tried another new series and the ratings data is in the drop-down Boat
Class menu OK now. Also, the rating is automatically inserted based on Boat
Class as it should be. So, perhaps my previous problem was due to loading
the uspn2003.csv file into the Ratings folder AFTER opening up the series.
I can't really remember the order, but that's the only possible difference I
can imagine.

Sorry for the bandwidth, but in the eventual documentation and Help files,
maybe it should be noted that ratings file(s) must be loaded before opening
up a new series.

1. When opening a new series, a pop-up tip window says that Sailwave can be
treated like a spreadsheet, in that a cell may be selected and the value
inserted. Instead, the cell is simply highlighted, but is not editable. It
would be very handy to edit an individual cell directly without having to
use the Edit Competitor window.

2. If Boat Class is included in an imported Competitor List csv file, it
does not result in the rating being pulled automatically from the ratings
file. One has to go into each competitor's Edit Competitor window and
re-select the Boat Class from the drop-down menu before the rating will be
pulled into the competitor's record. Can the wizard be made to pull in the
rating if the Boat Class matches one in the ratings file(s)?

3. The Boat Class field in an imported Competitor List csv file is
truncated to 16 characters during the import process, yet a ratings csv file
can have longer Boat Class fields. The result of this is that even if you
use the exact same name for a Boat Class, it gets truncated to 16 characters
and Sailwave lists it as another Boat Class in addition to the longer name
in the ratings csv file. One fix to this would be to edit the ratings file
to only have 16 (or less) characters in the Boat Class field. Maybe this
should also be a criteria for user-submitted ratings files.

4. When double-clicking on a column heading, the screen is then sorted in
alphabetical order based on the column double-clicked. However, Fleet names
"H16A, H16B, H18 and Open" were sorted in order of "H18, H16A, H16B and
Open". What algorithm is used to put "H18" before "H16A"?

5. We had a rather unusual regatta scoring situation this past weekend. On
Saturday, we had a single distance race in which boats were either fun
sailing or competitively sailing. This race was combined with buoy races on
Sunday for an overall race series for the competitive sailors. However, for
Saturday we wanted to score everyone (both the fun and competitive sailors)
together using the US Portsmouth rating system for some fun awards separate
from the weekend competitive series. I therefore used two different
Sailwave series files, transferring the competitor list from the series file
for the Saturday race to the second series file for the weekend. In order
to get the Saturday race results into BOTH series files, I first put them
into an Excel spreadsheet and then imported them into both series, deleting
the fun sailors from the weekend series file. There may be a more efficient
way to have done this, but my way seemed kind of awkward and time consuming
... on Saturday night. Sunday, I had the entire weekend series scored and
finalized 10 minutes after the last boat crossed the finish line. We had
several classes, one of which was US Portsmouth scored with the others being
position scored only.

Ed Muns

Hi Ed,

I recently did some work on the rating files folder etc - there were some
problems. it should be OK in 1.50. You can now explicitly request a reload
to sync changes to rating files with Sailwave's internal lists. Noe that
this does *not* affect competitor ratings in competitor records - just the
suggested default value when selecting a class etc.

Colin

Hi Edward

1. When opening a new series, a pop-up tip window says that
Sailwave can be
treated like a spreadsheet, in that a cell may be selected and the value
inserted. Instead, the cell is simply highlighted, but is not
editable. It
would be very handy to edit an individual cell directly without having to
use the Edit Competitor window.

I agree, in-place editing would be useful and it's on the list - you can
press Enter at present to open the appropriate Edit window and Enter again
to save it. The spreadsheed analogy was just meant to indicate that stuff
could be changed at any time...

Can the wizard be made to
pull in the
rating if the Boat Class matches one in the ratings file(s)?

There is a tool to do this in the Tools menu. It can be used in your
context (if the rating files exist) and also if you change rating system -
to update everything in one go. I forget the actual text on the menu but it
does seem to work OK.

3. The Boat Class field in an imported Competitor List csv file is
truncated to 16 characters during the import process, yet a
ratings csv file
can have longer Boat Class fields. The result of this is that even if you
use the exact same name for a Boat Class, it gets truncated to 16
characters
and Sailwave lists it as another Boat Class in addition to the longer name
in the ratings csv file. One fix to this would be to edit the
ratings file
to only have 16 (or less) characters in the Boat Class field. Maybe this
should also be a criteria for user-submitted ratings files.

OK, I'll fix it.

4. When double-clicking on a column heading, the screen is then sorted in
alphabetical order based on the column double-clicked. However,
Fleet names
"H16A, H16B, H18 and Open" were sorted in order of "H18, H16A, H16B and
Open". What algorithm is used to put "H18" before "H16A"?

I'll check that out. (I think it's a single click...?).

5. We had a rather unusual regatta scoring situation this past
weekend. On
Saturday, we had a single distance race in which boats were either fun
sailing or competitively sailing. This race was combined with
buoy races on
Sunday for an overall race series for the competitive sailors.
However, for
Saturday we wanted to score everyone (both the fun and
competitive sailors)
together using the US Portsmouth rating system for some fun
awards separate
from the weekend competitive series. I therefore used two different
Sailwave series files, transferring the competitor list from the
series file
for the Saturday race to the second series file for the weekend. In order
to get the Saturday race results into BOTH series files, I first put them
into an Excel spreadsheet and then imported them into both
series, deleting
the fun sailors from the weekend series file. There may be a
more efficient
way to have done this, but my way seemed kind of awkward and time
consuming
... on Saturday night. Sunday, I had the entire weekend series scored and
finalized 10 minutes after the last boat crossed the finish line. We had
several classes, one of which was US Portsmouth scored with the
others being
position scored only.

Lots of dev in progress so that an event can be structured far more flexible
than currently allows...

Thanks for the feedback.

regards,
Colin

Wow! 15 postings from Colin showed up this morning ... all responses to

No problem. I have made a 'rule' that I'm 'not allowed' to do Sailwave
development while there are pending Sailwave queries in my inbox; this'll
keep the inbox message count down and provide a more rapid/regular response
time; I have about 20 to go...
