Jon,
I had to beetle off to the airport once you resolved my problem so did not get time to say a huge thank you to Jon and all the other Sailwave User Group participants who gave advice and assistance on solving this (self induced!) problem. Despite my slow internet connection, Jon managed to work his way patiently through the possible problems until he identified and fixed the one which was giving me all the grief.
I have now run all of the past 2 years results through RYA NHC and compared the results to those under our more manual ECHO handicapping system used until now.
The outcome is not hugely different, but there are more different individual race winners under NHC because the penalty applied by NHC on a race win seems to make it difficult for a prior race winner to win again for several following races.
It also seems to work better with boats that have big changes in performance depending on the wind conditions (and course angles) and so makes it possible for a well sailed boat to have a good race even when conditions are not in their sweet spot.
Now I just have to simplify my template (exclude the many different versions which required 2 sets of aliases for a 45 boat fleet) so that our “ordinary” club members can use the programme when I go cruising!
Thanks again.

Hi Patrick,
There is definitely no need to start a new series you can change the template at any time - It should be easy and straight forward
You seem to have the templates in the correct place now (where they can be edited)
If you open the template with Excel C:\Users\Public\Documents\Sailwave\Templates\SWNHC3.xls
Does this have the modified version with the 50 in place of 40? - As this is the template that Sailwave is using it should then work.
If you still have a problem give me a telephone call

Jon,
Still having some difficulty with expanding my spreadsheet beyond 40 boats.
I have (temporarily) solved the problem by taking out those boats which didn’t compete in a given series, so the net result is still below 40 boats, and I can run my results that way.
What I am doing is I am taking the last series as the “template” for the new series, to preserve the NHC Ratings, but if I add the new boats, I get back to having more than 40, so I’m always deleting the ones which didn’t race (but which will appear in the next series) and adding the new ones and making sure I don’t go over the 40 limit.
I have followed your instructions regarding resetting the NHC excel template and changed my global settings to direct the rating file to SWNHC3.xls, see attached snip 7 and 8.
Perhaps I need to start a brand new series from scratch to get the new (50 boat limit) template, as copying an old series and using that as the basis for the next one seems to default back to the “old” (40 boat) template attached to that results file??

OK from the attachment the sheet size is set to 40
So either you didn’t edit the config sheet and set that to 50 (see earlier instructions) or it is not reading the correct template file in which case your configuration is wrong somewhere. Have you restarted Sailwave since you changed the locations? That may fix it.
If you need to diagnose where it is reading the template file from you can run Debugview (available free of charge from Microsoft https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb896647.aspx ) Run this before you score and it will contain within its printout where it got the template from but you should be able to get it working without this.

Hi Patrick,
You need to move it to the location shown in my previous post, and make sure that your global options are pointing to that location also.
With the new versions of windows (Since XP) you can’t edit files in the Program files folders and sub-directories without admin permissions or if you can it generates a phantom version of the file.
Any problems let me know.

Jon,
I am having difficulty in adding the additional cells on to the excel worksheet SWNHC3.xls
Firstly, the file was not in its default location, and I’m not sure why (I don’t recall setting any other default location – but maybe I did inadvertently?)
See Snip 1 for details
Then when I make the changes as you suggest I can’t save the file except in a different location and with a different name? I don’t appear to have administrator privileges.
See Snip 2 and 3 for details.
I may be just sufficiently unaware of the way to change these things that this, normal, step is beyond my excel abilities??
Grateful for any further help?
Thanks
Patrick

Hi Patrick
Not a big problem
First some background info
Sailwave is using a template SWNHC3.xls to specify the rules for the calculation This template by default is in Public Documents - Sailwave - Templates folder (C:\Users\Public\Documents\Sailwave\Templates) although you can change the folder in Sailwave - Setup - Global Options - Folders
First make a backup copy of this file then open it in Excel
Now lets assume you want to add another 10 lines
Click on the 9 of row 9 and while holding the button down move the mouse to 18 so that you have highlighted 10 rows as below
Now right click and select Copy
Now right click on the 19 and select Insert Copied Cells - see below
You have now inserted 10 more rows we just need to tell Sailwave that this template now has 10 more rows available. To do this click on the Config worksheet and change the SheetSize value from 40 to 50
Switch back to the Main sheet and select cell A4 (This is just a blank cell where the selection will appear when it runs) now save the modified sheet (must be SWNHC3.xls) and you are ready to go
The size of the sheet you use would depend upon you fleet size. It will work fine up to 200 boats but as you increase the size the spreadsheet gets larger and hence slower. Although the rows you copied look empty at first glance the cells do contain formulae.
Any problems please come back to me

I have encountered a problem with NHC in external mode.
My list of competitors has finally crossed the line from 40 to 41, and I am getting an error message telling me to use a larger template?
I have no idea how to do this, I assume this is with the excel spreadsheet that comes with Sailwave helper, but that spreadsheet is blank.
I attach a screen grab of same??
What should I do?

Hi Malcolm,
Thanks for sharing your insights.
For new entrants to a series who do not have an NHC rating from previous races, I have used PY as the default initial rating.
Given your observation I’ll use external mode.
Thanks,
Ian

I had a similar query recently - Jon provided the answer - using Portsmouth ratings isn’t quite correct for NHC and the internal mode doesn’t cater for this. The external mode gives the correct figures (coverts correctly back to Portsmouth)

Hi Jon,
Here is an example blw file which gives different race ratings in NHC external and internal modes. I have also included screen shots of the race ratings so you can see what I’m seeing…
I have also noticed that when I select “custom external” mode a message appears saying SWNHC4 is not found in the template directory.
I am using the latest version of SW downloaded from the web site last week.
Glad to have your insights–many thanks for your patience.
Kind regards,

Hi - Ian there should be no difference - if there is then there is something wrong. With the external mode you can see all the calculations.
If you could send me a blw that has different results then I will investigate and tell you why. May be if you could tell which is the first race that is different then it would give you a clue.
May be it is it the use of some scoring code?
