NHC

I just loaded the new BETA version to test the NHC scoring system. I set up as a club NHC (not Regatta mode) for 3 boats in a 5 race series. I set all initial Handicap's to 1 and for each race I entered the same start time and an end time 1 minute later for each boat in all races,i.e. consistant results for every race. I could see that the NHC handicap was gradually increasing for the winning boat, staying the same for the boat coming second and reducing for the boat coming in 3rd. This all changed though when the first discard kicked in on race 3. Suddenly the lead boat handicap returned back to 1 thus restoring his dominance. What is that all about? When I read the details of the NHC on the RYA site, I don't see anything about changing the handicap if discards are applied, or maybe I am mistaken!!

I've previously analyzed the RYA NHC documentation in detail and I
believe you are correct.

I haven't actually tried scoring with the new NHC system yet. I wonder
if you could provide your BLW file. I'm guessing there is a glitch
somewhere as I don't think that the results of a previous race should
later change just because that race is not used (i.e., is discarded) for
purposes of series scoring, regardless of how personal handicaps are
being determined.

Hi John,

I would not expect a discard cutting in to have an effect as this

information is not passed through, to the best of my knowledge, to
the calculation routine. If you care to make your .BLW file
available I am sure Jon will and Art will take a look and report
back.

It would be useful to know if the version you are using is the one

available on the Sailwave web site or a later revision that has only
so far been made available via this SUG. The later revisions have
not been made available on the web site as Jon is trying to sort out
another issue, not related to NHC functionality, before uploading a
newer revision.

Jon is in Largs this week helping with scoring at the 2013 RYA

Youth Nationals, so may not be quite as responsive as usual this
week.

Kind regards,
Huw

Yes I downloaded the BETA version from the Sailwave Web Site yesterday it is version 2.9.4. I played around by delaying the 1st discard to race 5 and this corrected the problem I then put the discard back to cut in at race 3 and the original fault of incorrect NHC handicap number did not reappear.

This morning I started from scratch to recreate the problem from a new series and I now have a different problem in which the lead boat in race 3 has had its handicap reduced to 0 from the value 1. Quite mad. The problems I am seeing appear to be related to the order I enter values. I will see how I can upload the blw file for further examination.

John

Hi John,

Thanks for the information. One other thing - do you have the latest

version of SWHelper file which can be got at https://dl.dropbox.com/u/220425/SWHelper.EXE
and should be the latest version available! You will need the
following files as well to go with latest SWHelper:

To see which version of SWHelper you have, hover over the

application icon on windows explorer or right click and select
properties. FYI - The latest version of SWHelper 1.0.18.

Jon is hoping to have alook at your upload file later today before

the results start coming ashore from the race teams here in Largs
(2013 RYA Youth Championships).

My SWHelper is version 1.0.9.0, obviously quite old.

What does SWHelper do?

Please excuse my ignorance

Hi John,

Yes the version of SWHelper you have been using is the original

version of the NHC functionality, the latest version is 1.0.18.0.
Please obtain the 3 files listed below and see if you have the same
problem.

  • Place the SWHelper.exe in the same folder as the sailwave.exe

  • place the two .XLS files in the templates folder under the

    Sailwave folder
SWHelper is the utility that extracts data from the Sailwave .BLW
file and performs either internally (faster) the NHC calculations or
passes the data into Excel so the calculations are visible.

Simplistically, SWHelper is the utility that provides all the NHC
    functionality.

Hope this helps and that the newer versions overcome the problems
you have experienced. If not let us know.

Just starting to get results in so may be slower to respond for a
    while.

    Kind regards,

Hi Hugh,

I downloaded and install the 3 files and that seems to have fixed the blw file that I posted so I guess these latest Helper and supporting xls files have the necessary fix.

If I install the latest BETA version of Sailwave on another PC will it automatically also install the latest SWHelper.exe and xls files or will this need to be done manually for now?

I'll do some more dummy test results on what I have now and see if it throws up any other issues. I guess that this is the idea of a BETA version.

Regards,

John

Hi John,

Pleased hear that the problems you have been having so far have been

cured.

Unfortunately you will have to install the SWHelper.exe and two .XLS

files on a new PC, the install of Sailwave does not install them.

Hi Hugh,

Now having thought I have a working BETA sailwave app for NHC I have been doing more experimental tests. I did a test to check convergence over a period of races for the club and the regatta mode NHC1 and NHC2 by continuing to enter the same elapsed times for each boat in each race but with a 1 minute difference between each boat, all boats starting with and NHC# of 1.000 I found for club mode convergence to the same corrected time appeared to be achieved faster than regatta mode. When I looked at the calculated corrected times however I found that it is not complying with C= E x NHC# with the one exception where NHC# = 1.000. Am I missing something here or am I being stupid. Is it a simple multiplication of the elapsed time in seconds with the NHC# or is there some other factoring to get the corrected time?

I'll upload an example series result pdf

Kind Regards,

John

Hi John,

Could you do a screen shot or publish the Ratings that Sailwave is using for each Race/Competitor

If you press “F6” then “r” Sailwave will display the ratings used for each calculation.

I’m not sure what the NHC1 is displaying as this doesn’t appear to be the rating that is being used

Hi John,

I downloaded and ran your blw but I don’t get the same times as you - See screen shots below

I think mine look OK I’ve put yours below just for easy reference - I agree yours are not correct although I don’t understand how you generated them as when I generated them they seem correct. The calculation of corrected time from the rating and elapsed time is done by the standard Sailwave code and has nothing to do with the NHC code. The NHC code generates the ratings but does not do the calculation of the corrected time and the positions.

Hi John,

Could you do a screen shot or publish the Ratings that Sailwave is using

for each Race/Competitor

If you press “F6” then “r” Sailwave will display the ratings used for each

calculation.

I’m not sure what the NHC1 is displaying as this doesn’t appear to be the

rating that is being used

Look forward to hearing from you

Hi Hugh,

Now having thought I have a working BETA sailwave app for NHC I have been

doing more experimental tests. I did a test to check convergence over a

period of races for the club and the regatta mode NHC1 and NHC2 by

continuing to enter the same elapsed times for each boat in each race but

with a 1 minute difference between each boat, all boats starting with and

NHC# of 1.000 I found for club mode convergence to the same corrected time

appeared to be achieved faster than regatta mode. When I looked at the

calculated corrected times however I found that it is not complying with C=

E x NHC# with the one exception where NHC# = 1.000. Am I missing something

here or am I being stupid. Is it a simple multiplication of the elapsed

time in seconds with the NHC# or is there some other factoring to get the

corrected time?

I’ll upload an example series result pdf

Kind Regards,

John

Hi John,

Pleased hear that the problems you have been having so far have been

cured.

Unfortunately you will have to install the SWHelper.exe and two .XLS

files on a new PC, the install of Sailwave does not install them.

Kind regards,

Huw

Hi Hugh,

I downloaded and install the 3 files and that seems to have fixed the

blw file that I posted so I guess these latest Helper and supporting

xls files have the necessary fix.

If I install the latest BETA version of Sailwave on another PC will it

automatically also install the latest SWHelper.exe and xls files or

will this need to be done manually for now?

I’ll do some more dummy test results on what I have now and see if it

throws up any other issues. I guess that this is the idea of a BETA

version.

Hi John,

Yes the version of SWHelper you have been using is the original

version

of the NHC functionality, the latest version is 1.0.18.0. Please

obtain

the 3 files listed below and see if you have the same problem.

  • Place the SWHelper.exe in the same folder as the sailwave.exe
  • place the two .XLS files in the templates folder under the Sailwave

folder

SWHelper is the utility that extracts data from the Sailwave .BLW

file

and performs either internally (faster) the NHC calculations or

passes

the data into Excel so the calculations are visible.

Simplistically, SWHelper is the utility that provides all the NHC

functionality.

Hope this helps and that the newer versions overcome the problems you

have experienced. If not let us know.

Just starting to get results in so may be slower to respond for a

while.

The

Well that is strange, I am running your BETA version 2.9.4 with the latest SWHelper and xls files. Is it because I am running it in Windows 7?

One odd thing I get when I run this version of Sailwave is that it always asks if I want to load a later version of sailwave but the version it offers me is the older 2.8.5 so I decline.

What do you think I should do now?

I'm sorted I think. I rebooted the PC and all calcs seem to work in club and regatta modes.

What do you think I should do now?

I think mine look OK I’ve put yours below just for easy reference - I agree

yours are not correct although I don’t understand how you generated them as

when I generated them they seem correct. The calculation of corrected time

from the rating and elapsed time is done by the standard Sailwave code and

has nothing to do with the NHC code. The NHC code generates the ratings

but does not do the calculation of the corrected time and the positions.

Hi John,

Could you do a screen shot or publish the Ratings that Sailwave is using

If you press “F6” then “r” Sailwave will display the ratings used for

each

calculation.

I’m not sure what the NHC1 is displaying as this doesn’t appear to be the

rating that is being used

Look forward to hearing from you

Hi Hugh,

Now having thought I have a working BETA sailwave app for NHC I have

been

doing more experimental tests. I did a test to check convergence over a

period of races for the club and the regatta mode NHC1 and NHC2 by

continuing to enter the same elapsed times for each boat in each race

but

with a 1 minute difference between each boat, all boats starting with

and

NHC# of 1.000 I found for club mode convergence to the same corrected

time

appeared to be achieved faster than regatta mode. When I looked at the

calculated corrected times however I found that it is not complying

with C=

E x NHC# with the one exception where NHC# = 1.000. Am I missing

something

here or am I being stupid. Is it a simple multiplication of the elapsed

time in seconds with the NHC# or is there some other factoring to get

the

corrected time?

I’ll upload an example series result pdf

Unfortunately you will have to install the SWHelper.exe and two .XLS

Hi John,

Yes the version of SWHelper you have been using is the original

version

of the NHC functionality, the latest version is 1.0.18.0. Please

obtain

the 3 files listed below and see if you have the same problem.

  • Place the SWHelper.exe in the same folder as the sailwave.exe
  • place the two .XLS files in the templates folder under the

Sailwave

folder

SWHelper is the utility that extracts data from the Sailwave .BLW

file

and performs either internally (faster) the NHC calculations or

passes

the data into Excel so the calculations are visible.

Simplistically, SWHelper is the utility that provides all the NHC

Hope this helps and that the newer versions overcome the

Hi John,

Thanks for the information. One other thing - do you have the

latest

version of SWHelper file which can be got at

https://dl.dropbox.com/u/220425/SWHelper.EXE and should be

the

latest

version available! You will need the following files as well

to

go with

latest SWHelper:

To see which version of SWHelper you have, hover over the

application

icon on windows explorer or right click and select

properties.

FYI -

The

latest version of SWHelper 1.0.18.

Jon is hoping to have alook at your upload file later today

before the

results start coming ashore from the race teams here in Largs

(2013 RYA

Youth Championships).

Kind regards,

Huw

Yes I downloaded the BETA version from the Sailwave Web

Site

yesterday

it is version 2.9.4. I played around by delaying the 1st

discard to

race 5 and this corrected the problem I then put the

discard

back to

cut in at race 3 and the original fault of incorrect NHC

handicap

number did not reappear.

This morning I started from scratch to recreate the problem

from a

new

series and I now have a different problem in which the lead

boat in

race 3 has had its handicap reduced to 0 from the value 1.

Quite mad.

The problems I am seeing appear to be related to the order

I

enter

values. I will see how I can upload the blw file for

further

examination.

Regards,

John

Hi John,

I would not expect a discard cutting in to have an

effect as

this

information is not passed through, to the best of my

knowledge,

to the

calculation routine. If you care to make your .BLW file

available I am

sure Jon will and Art will take a look and report back.

It would be useful to know if the version you are using

is

the one

available on the Sailwave web site or a later revision

that

has

only so

far been made available via this SUG. The later revisions

have

not been

made available on the web site as Jon is trying to sort

out

another

issue, not related to NHC functionality, before

uploading a

newer

revision.

Jon is in Largs this week helping with scoring at the

2013

RYA Youth

Nationals, so may not be quite as responsive as usual

this

week.

Kind regards,

Huw

I just loaded the new BETA version to test the NHC

scoring

system. I

set up as a club NHC (not Regatta mode) for 3 boats in

a 5

race

series. I set all initial Handicap’s to 1 and for each

race I

entered

the same start time and an end time 1 minute later for

each

boat in

all races,i.e. consistant results for every race. I

could

see

that

the

NHC handicap was gradually increasing for the winning

boat,

staying

the same for the boat coming second and reducing for

the

boat

coming

in 3rd. This all changed though when the first discard

kicked

in on

race 3. Suddenly the lead boat handicap returned back

to 1

thus

restoring his dominance. What is that all about? When I

read the

anything

about

changing the handicap if discards are applied, or

maybe I

am

mistaken!!
