One person racing in different boats

Hello,

We run Friday evening races for dinghies and cruisers. It sometimes happens that someone sails a different boat from usual. Currently I handle this in Sailwave by creating a different persona for each boat they sail - but this means that they will almost certainly not win the series! How can I handle this situation, please?

Sailwave links are below. (I haven’t updated to the latest version of Sailwave, am worried about doing so mid-season!)

Thanks in advance for your help!

Sue,

This can be done with a single entry for that person, just edit the

rating for those races where he sails a different boat. “Edit
Result”, “Rating” tab, “Race rating”
The scorer must just be informed that he is sailing with a different
sail number.

Hi Suzanne,

Another suggestion for you to consider is using the Notes field

for the competitor to record which races they sailed which boat
and publish so everyone is kept informed.

Kind regards,

Huw

Many thanks to Malcolm and Huw for their suggestions, which I have implemented. Just one more question, hopefully the last! We have one competitor who has sailed in both Fleet A & B (in a variety of club boats). How do I score him for Spring, Summer and Combined, please? The Combined file is below. Competitor is Keith Barkway, listed under various personas. Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi Sue,

One way to do this is to combine the two fleets into one and use just the original elapsed time in one of the fleets. This can only work if both fleets sailed the same course. The pure racers will say that this is not fair since the boats (both fleets) were not on the start line at the same time, but anything to keep boats racing and involved in sailing is a good thing.

I had a look at your results and for your long series you might want to have a look at Chips or any of the other high point scoring systems. It’s a lot harder to be 1st in a 20 boat fleet than a 2 boat fleet. The nice thing is that you can just flip back and forth with scoring systems and see if you are getting fairer results.
