If you have downloaded the latest version of Sailwave (1.95), you may have
noticed a new plug in to submit your results to www.sailracer.co.uk , well
done Colin.
SailRacer is the World's largest searchable online database of sailing race
results, covering 1300 events over ten years, representing around 30,000
sailors. For the World of sailing this is a very important archive of
race results, one of the key objectives being to ensure that sailing
results are not lost over time, avoiding the tendency of past events
results disappearing once the event website closes down.
For clubs and classes, SailRacer gives you some additional publicity for
your events, and increasingly other sailing sites which are taking
SailRacer result feeds, giving further opportunities to spread the word
about your events.
Additionally event organisers can incorporate SailRacer into their own
website, giving searchable results just for your own events and an
automated system to manage your results on your own website.
So with the new Sailwave plug in, at the click of a button your results
will be :
* Automatically archived at SailRacer
* Displayed on www.sailracer.co.uk and other sailing websites
* Available to be incorporated into your own website
* Ability for event organisers to manage their own results, update
and edit
* Include event reports and photos etc
This in effect gives an automated process to manage your results and their
publication to a variety of websites including your own. Like Sailwave this
is all free, with the aim of supporting sailing.

Nice, but…
What happens if for any reason the service is discontinued?
At the level of a regional and national federations, we use to receive the results from the organising clubs and use them for annual rankings and archiving.
If we implement this system, we fear that the clubs rely on it and forget to send us their copy. So if sailracer.co.uk comes off line, noone else has the archive.
Is it possible to extend the function to other archiving servers, even send it to several servers?

Also, the data protection act requires that competitors are told who their personal information is going to be given to. In theory it may need tick boxes on entry forms to allow results to be sent to sailracer etc…
I’ve ignored this issue for now because I doubt anybody really minds - but - in theory - it could it become a sore point…?

Valid point, but as with any service it is difficult to predict what may happen in the future, but the more people who use SailRacer the less likely it is going to disappear.
Here in the UK the RYA are making extensive use of the service, from club racing through to ranking and performance analysis at Olympic level, and one of their key criteria was the longevity of the system.
For event organisers there is a facility to manage your own results on SailRacer, including an export routine so you can have your own local copy of your own data, giving you a secure backup
Hope this reassures you and certainly it is my intention that SailRacer is long tern service for all those involved in sailing

Most of the Junior and Youth events I have been involved in have some form of disclaimer allowing the organisers to use competitor names and images for event publicity etc, I am working on the Youth Nationals entry system at the moment and will check what that uses.
Don’t see this as a major problem, but sensible for the event organisers to have something in the NOR to cover themselves. SailRacer is only collecting names as part of the results.
