OOD and average points - changes published race result

Hi, Sorry if this has been covered before, I searched the archives but
couldn't find an answer.

Like many clubs we use different OOD's per race, and I am coding them
as 'OOD'. The average points feature works fine for the series, but
when I publish the results of any one particular race, the OOD
features as a placed boat in the race, thus displacing everyone else
below his average position down the position list. For instance, if
the OOD's average position for the race when he was OOD is 2nd, the
published race result shows two 2nd places, and the third place boat
in the race is displaced to 4th, etc. It only does this on the
publish sheet, in Sailwave itself the positions are correct.

How do I correct this? We need to have the OOD code for calculating
the series positions, but obviously for the results of a particular
race the OOD shouldn't feature as a placed boat.

Any ideas? (I am a new user so bear with me if I am asking a dumb
question).

Regards,

Jon.

Hi Jon,

The position shown is not the boat's place in the race, rather the overall
position having listed all the boats points in order; it's a publication
thing only and there is no getting away from it I'm afraid.

e.g. consider that there are 3 boats in a race and a 4th guy does OOD and
his average is 1.5 points. The results would be:-

Boat Place/Result Points Position/Rank
A 1 1.0 1
D OOD 1.5 2
B 2 2.0 3
C 3 3.0 4

So bat B for example was 2nd place in the race, was rewarded 2.0 points for
the race but was ranked or had position 3 after listing the points in order.

Does that help, or have I mised your point...

Colin J

Hi Colin,

Thanks for the excellently fast response! I think you have got my
point, yes... unfortunately, from what you say, there is no way round
this.

I do understand the logic of publishing the results of a race using
the points of the competitiors to rank them, obviously. It just seems
to me that when I print out the results of a particular race and stick
them up on the board for the competitors to see how they did, the
placement of the OOD in the rankings (and the subsequent displacement
of all below) could be confusing for the competitors. The competitor
who came 2nd last night for instance queried why he was placed 3rd in
the ranking I displayed on the board. Given that Sailwave does not do
this in the program, I was surprised that it did so in the published
results. (I am not sure if I am explaining myself here very well: In
the sailwave program for last nights race the boats are all ranked
correctly, with the OOD code placed in the rankings at the appropriate
place - but not displacing the boats placed below him. In other
words, although the OOD has 2nd place average points for last nights
race, the boat which finished 2nd on the night is still shown as
second place in the race. This is different from what is shown on the
race results sheet I get through the 'Publish' menu route where he is
shown as in 3rd place).

I assume there is no other way to display the results of a single race
other than through 'Publish'?

Anyway, many thanks for your help, this is an excellent program.

Regards

Jon.

Hi Jon,

In the program/series-summary, you're probably looking at the scored points
or recorded results, which will both show 2 (place=2, score=2.0 points) in
your case, but if you use the view menu to view positions (or change the
view from the drop down list in the toolbar) you see the 2 change to a 3.
One thing I have thought about doing recently is *always* show a decimal
point when displaying points so that 2 is not confused with overall-position
or rank of 2.

How would you like to show the race results table in this context? Perhaps
we can accommodate it...

Colin,

If I may be so bold as to suggest a wish-list item...

It would be nice if there was a code 'OOD' which would not appear as a
placed boat in the Race Results publish sheet. I could then use this
to print out the race results on a race-by-race basis (over the course
of a series). At the end of a series, when the average points for
OODs can be accurately known, the Series Results publish sheet could
then take into account the OOD average points scores.

Alternatively, a way to print out just the results of a single race
which ignored OOD codes would do the same job. To me it makes sense
for the competitors to see how they did on the water in a particular
race without the OOD affecting their position.

Regards,

Jon.
