Open Class in Barcelona Spain

Hello Sailors,

We are trying to set up a rating compensation for our Open Class
regattas in Barcelona.
The boats to race are:
Laser 4.7
420
Class A Catamaran
F-18
Hobiecat 16

Which ratings should we apply to each boat assuming that the distance
to race is 2 miles?

Thanks for your attention & Keep on sailing

Pixie

I didn’t see any reply from any of the learned fellows from the UK on this - are they too busy sailing on the flash floods?

In the interests of keeping dialogue on SUG active, I can comment thus:

Apply normal Portsmouth ratings to the times recorded for the yachts that sail the 2 mile course.

Laser 4.7 - 1175

420 - 1087

Hobiecat 16 - 802

F-18 691

Sorry - I wasn’t able to locate a rating figure for the A Class cat - perhaps someone else can oblige?

regards,

Probably didn't understand the question (why is 'distance' so
important? - unless it's very short with a congested start line, which
handicaps slower boats), as most of us would just look at
http://www.rya.org.uk/NR/rdonlyres/EDF80042-FF80-48C2-827F-672E1C596B37/0/2007PNList.xls
IMHO, as the 420 and Laser4.7 both need a good blow to sail to their
handicap, then the standard PY #'s you quote would probably be OK
between them, but I haven't a clue regarding the cats sensitivity to
wind (although our dear departed moggie didn't like the rain......)

Mike,

I see the A class cataramaran isn’t listed on the RYA website for which you provided the link. Aren’t there enough of them around to warrant one?

Doesn’t Colin Jenkins sail one of these sometimes?

Probably not (well, not enough sailing under PY rating system). I'd
suggest that the OP looks at the Texel ratings (see Sailwave
resources) for A-class relative to Hobie etc. and makes up his own PY
#. Altenatively, if he thinks there will be more cats than monohulls,
use Texel and dream up some 420 and laser 4.7 #'s.

To get a RYA PY clubs must send in returns and unlike the US system (just send the elsped times straight form Sailwave etc) its not a straightforward process - hence relatively few clubs do it.
