Optimist Scoring

Hi folks,

Is there a better way to score Optimist regattas. All fleets (red, blue
and white which are age defined) start together and are scored as one
large fleet. The published scoring is for the individual fleets using
the score generated from the overall scoring.

I have been using "Score" to generate the overall results, and then
publishing the results for each fleet and editting to positions in the
htlm file to change them from the overall postion to the fleet position
of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc. Although this works, I would like to avoid
editting the html files.

Hi Dave,

Could you not use the 'score fleets' button. This uses the original scores
to score each fleet independently of the others but the final positions are
usually the same or very similar to reranking scored (across all fleets)
positions by fleet. Do the SIs explicitly say the fleet scores are to be
derived from the overall positions or it is open to interpretation - it
often is in this particular case... This happened at the XXX Nationals some
years ago and they eventually decided that scoring the fleets individually
was a better way to get fleet results...

Hi Colin,

I suspect that by rights I could use the score by fleets, but the Opti Parents
would be up in arms if I didn't follow the USODA policy quote below.

···

*******
Overall Scoring Is Official USODA Policy The USODA Board of Directors, at their
August 1997
meeting, adopted overall scoring as the officially preferred scoring method for
Optimist
events.Overall scoring (the approved system) determines places within the red,
blue, and white
fleets simply by looking at the overall results. Let's use blue fleet as an
example. To determine 1st
through 5th place in blue fleet using overall scoring, you simply run down the
overall list of finishers
and look for the first blue fleeter, the second blue fleeter, etc. This gives
you the order of finishes in
blue fleet. Awards are then made using this list. Thus, using overall scoring,
the line of scores next to
the winner of blue fleet would be an exact repeat of that sailor's overall
scores, and not the scores of
how that blue fleeter did when looking only at blue fleet sailors. The order of
blue fleet finishers with
respect to one another is exactly the same as their order of finishes when
looking at the overall
results.Overall scoring is far simpler for competitors to understand. For the
same reason, it's also
easier for an official scorer to use. You can quickly and easily derive fleet
results simply by looking at
a printout of the overall results. All regatta organizers are urged to use this
scoring method, rather
than fleet scoring, when calculating standings in red, blue, and white fleet.

OK, I have a think about it. Best thing for now is score normally and then
click the fleet column header to sort by fleet - when you sort by fleet,
Sailwave sorts by fleet + position so you get separated results but using
the original positions; kind of a half way house. But perhaps you do this
already! CJ
